The one thing that really assauged my 3d-buying guilt is that: almost all hobbies cost money and spending money is okay as long as you have a budget. I set around $230-250 CAD each month, but that's really dependent on how poorly our dollar is doing versus USD. It used to be a lot less :(

A tip         Set yourself a 3D budget.  Each month, on pay day buy yourself a gift certificate for that amount  and then redeem it so it sits in your account as Store credit.

Sometimes there are special offers on Gift Certs, so you can save money on them.

Store credit is like money, it doesn't expire, it just sits in your account till you want to use it, and then it works just like money.

There is only one thing you cannot buy with a gift cert, or store credit, and that is another gift cert.

good idea. my wife and I get me a visa or mc gift card with my budget on it. once that's gone I put change from one onto the other till I get enough for a GC to avoid waste.

Soooo, I bought the platinum package today (It was technically free given the money i saved and I made $3 after the discount it gave me).  I'm afraid to open the shopping tab now!

I just saw a thread where people have hundreds of pages of items.  And now, I can see how that could happen!

As far as trouble.. the fact you ask shows enough brains to say "maybe not".

    Yeah, that's me not helping

  • I am in big trouble I guess.  I have spent over my budget.

I'm OK, I'm still within budget. February 2017's budget, perhaps, but I'm still within it.

Budget? I don need no stinkin budget! I do a fine job of self-control except those months when Stonemason, DzFire, i13, First Bastion, Rane, Bobbie 25, Sarsa, ARTCollaborations, Polish, Pettipet, Kibarreto ... have a new release.

Yes.  Big trouble, especially if you dn't know the unwritten rules of the store first - the first and foremost of which is:

No matter what you're looking at, remember that it will ALWAYS go on sale again, and, excluding PC+ items*, the average DAZ original product will go on sale for 65-75% off at least within any given six week period after the first two months the item is in the store.  If you don't have an immediate need for an item, use the wishlist.  Time is on your side.

*PC+ items go on sale less frequently, but they DO go on sale, and as others have noted, during certain events like the PC sale they can be discounted significantly.

    LOL.

Although thinking about the kernel of truth in that statement, it is less funny... But still a little funny.

Now that you're in the PC - go look at the PC items and the prices. There are some outstanding items available for very low prices.

And remember - if it is NOT a PC item, it will always go on sale again sometime in the future.

I'm glad the month is almost over. I will only have to dig slightly into next months budget.

  • Great advice everyone!  And I am glad to see the humor as well!  I am making good use of the wishlist. And its most useful information to realize that things will go on sale for a good discount.  Knowing that will definitely help me say no

Oh yes! That is another good tip. Popular PAs *always* go on sale, so don't feel like you have to buy on every sale that comes up. Always keep an eye on the PAs with a slower release cycle.

Pro tip. Render more, shop less. So once you buy stuff go render. It's ok to do an intitial spree to get some stuff to work with, but keep in mind the more you buy the lower percentage of it will ever be used. You can easily buy way faster than you can use it. Common problem.

Some people are collectors though, so each their own. I like to use stuff I buy so I am selective :) After you realize you have stuff you bought years ago and still haven't used, you start to be more aware of this stuff.

The collecting is fun, but really all we are collecting here is patterns of ones and zeros; at least with products that have a physical presence in the world there is something tangible... So there has to be a purpose for the collecting imo: rendering fulfills that role.

  • I don't find it fun to see stuff I bought in my runtime that hasn't been used, and will likely never get used.

At least with physical goods, they occupy some space in the house and make it more lived in.laugh

  • Simple rule: don't buy something new,  until you've rendered what you've picked up yesterday.  And all will be well with the world.  blush

I have too little space so I cannot have too much stuff

  • Well, I know what kind of art i like to make so I am trying to stick to the things that will further that goal.  For instance, I tend to focus on fantasty and science fiction, medeival scenes and things along those lines.  While a lot of what's out there is beautiful I don't have any need for a brand new car, or a fancy night on the town dress.  I am mostly looking for things that will fit in with the  genre I want to get good in lol.  So the dragons are high on my list as well as swords and medieval weaponry.  A fancy futuristic home, not so much. Although if it was ever free....

I signed up as a platinum member last year, at the end of September, and was immediately hit with the PC Anniversary sale! Yeah, I spent too much money. Way too much money.

Looking back, my advice to anyone starting out in DAZ is to only buy what you need for your current render(s) as you become familiar with the program. Like everyone said above, everything will go on sale at some point. And if you don't have a need right now for that new bright shiny (3D) object, waiting can save you a lot of money.

Once you're more familiar with the program and the content, you'll be less likely to buy products you can't use with this version of DS or the newer versions of figures.

And even with that precaution, you will still (probably) redline your 3d budget monthly!

Good luck. And welcome to the club. yes

If you are on a budget of any kind, then yes, you operate under a different approach. But you'll find enough here to get really nice things even with a limited budget.

One other thing- the products are not guaranteed to be in the store forever. That's a problem with the "wait, it will come around again, there will be other sales" approach. I have almost all of Lisa's botanicals and Ken's birds- paid anywhere from $3- $6 for the products that are $20 elsewhere now. (and up.)  Haven't used all of them yet, but never regretted buying them at a great price.

  • My advice is to set a budget.  You wont be able to stick to it but everyone needs goals.   The grift card idea is also good.  However, I should warn you the previous posts in this thread are not exaggerations.  Credit cards do huddle in corners whimpering and bleeding. Wallets do end up in the unlikeliest places even though you would swear that pu put them safely back in your pocket or purse.

I wouldn't worry much over stuff leaving the store. Yes I have seen it happen, yep vendors move around sometimes and sometimes randomly items aren't sold anymore for some reason. A good price is tempting, but there is lots of that to be expected in this community. If you buy for cheap and never use it then it's still a loss. However I have also bought stuff and not used it for a year(but then did), so even if you don't use it instantly doesn't mean it was a waste.

Point is everyone has their own balance and should be aware of buying habbits and how often they use items they buy so they don't burn out from overbuying like some people have.

  • Thanks for the cookies and donuts lol!  one nice thing about not owning any major credit cards is the fact that if I want to buy food I have to stop buying other stuff at some point.  at least according the my family lolol.
