Cannot Find The Saloon Of The Different Kind:

In the UK, a "Saloon" is a car with a boot (or trunk if you're American), where the rear window is fixed in place and therefore not attached to the part that opens.  I've been looking for a stylish, sensible-looking saloon with a nice roomy boot, something like the MK1 Rover 800 Saloon (Image 1).  But on here, searching "Saloon" results in a visit to the Wild West!

It's understandable the search would do that, but I wish there were some sensible-looking luxury saloon cars (preferably of 80s design as these are).  The only saloon I found on here was a bit too sporty looking, too rounded, and would be completely useless to me anyway since the boot doesn't even appear to open.  So I need a big saloon car with a nice, roomy boot for fitting a body in (it's for a Comix I have in mind).  Unfortunately, the modern MPV and 4WD hatchbacks I've found so far on here all look the same to me (as do most modern cars).  They all suffer from that samey-samey 'Bezier-Curve' effect, and just don't have the same sort of stylish vibe to them as a razor-edged Rover Saloon and others like it do.  I mean, even the hatchback version of the same car (Image 2). that would be equally suitable, although I prefer the style of saloons.

Hard to tell whether I'm missing a whole bunch of saloon models due to the way I'm searching on here, but if anyone knows of anything like this, a car with the same sort of vibe that would look good in black, then I would really love to see a few links to models on here if anyone has any!

The only other thing I should point out is that I have no interest, what-so-ever, in any model with an "Editorial" license, or any other form of restrictive license.

    Don't our pubs also have saloon bars and lounge bars? Or at least, didn't they - I admit these days they all seem to run together.

    I think what you're calling a saloon will be called a sedan by the people living in the US:

    This doesn't have that fixed-in-place rear window, but is the closest to your image that I remember seeing. And is fully rigged with a trunk that opens etc.

    Can I suggest you look at 3DClassics and Truform over at Rendo. Both sell a variety of vehicles, but the 1980's is a difficult intermediate age. Too new to be classic & too old to be modern. I think they both have one or two alternatives that are usable, but not ideal, I leave you to decide if any might be - I think some 1970's vehicles like the Citroen SM may be suitable, but few people seem to agree with my choices. I know I saw Citroen DS21's in the 1980's, they were my preferred vehicle if I ever found a 2CV was beyond my reach.

    Not sure when the freebie Fiat 126 was - https://www.renderosity.com/freestuff/items/69312/fiat-126 It's an old model, but updates to Iray very nicely.

    Regards,

    Richard

    I guess you checked DAZ already for a vehicle, so maybe going to Renderosity and checking the products by TruForm or 3DClassics might help? Many of them are Poser products, but often (not always...) work nicely in DAZ (maybe with some effort spent on the textures to get them Iray ready)

    Can't give any links, because of forum rules though ;)

    @Richard
    I've not been in a pub for decades!  I'm far too introvert for that, but nevertheless I would eventually lose my patience and I'd be barred for sure, so it's just as well I don't use them!  The last time I entered a pub was with my mother and father during a visit to Blackpool.  It was some place hidden directly below the Blackpool Tower, which funny enough, I do recall was made to look like either an American Saloon, or the inside of a Galleon!

    @Elor
    Indeed, Sedan is the American term, not many on here though and I'm shocked at how little choice there is when it comes to cars!

    @SapphireBlue
    That's actually the correct type, a saloon/sedan where the rear window stays stationary when boot/trunk is opened.  That one you linked to is currently the best candidate.  The styling is too rounded for my personal taste but it still does work for the sort of character who will be driving it.  The character will be smartly dressed, suit and tie, short hair and stubble and wearing some dark shades.  So it definitely fits, although I was wanting it to create a Giallo-style Comix, so that the Comix itself would also work as a sort of story-board for shooting a live-action Indie further down the line.  Getting a bit beyond myself there for now, but it's something I've wanted to do for many years (I've even invested in the gear needed to shoot it some day) so will do eventually.

    @richardandtracy
    I appreciate the link, but I'd rather avoid having to shop at yet another store if I can help it.  I do agree about Citroen though, in fact another two cars I like are the Citroen XM (Image 1) and the Citroen BX (Image 2).  Both of those have the same hard-edged look to them that I like, although they lack the simplistic elegance and classic three-box design of the MK1 Rover 800 saloon.  I often wondered though, how many people driving around in a Citroen BX, were aware that it was designed by the one and only Marcello Gandini, the man responsible for designing the Lamborghini Countach!

    @maikdecker
    Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd rather avoid adding more stores to my purchasing places if I can help it.  Not sure what you mean about links though, I've seen plenty of links to other stores etc.

    Probably not quite what You want: Car Roland and Iray Addon, Majestic GT, Limousine Prince (with two Iray add-ons)

    Not being ready to shop elsewhere limits Your possibilities, but of course that's Your own and personal choice cheeky

    Modern option: https://www.daz3d.com/zirael-flyte-hatchback-family-car

    Similar idea to the original photo but boot doesn't open: https://www.daz3d.com/valley-drifter

    Edit: I completely misread you were NOT looking for hatchbacks. Oops, haha. Some rigged trunks that haven't already been mentioned:

    Searches for this type of car might include:

    • Hatchback
    • Crossover SUV

    Hatchbacks are the opposite of what is sought, though. The desire is something where the luiggage compartment (boot/trunk) is separate from the passenger area.

    This freebie is a saloon with an opening boot.

    https://sharecg.com/v/81563/favorite/21/DAZ-Studio/CELICA-GT-steering-on-the-left-version

    It is based off a 70s-80s Toyota Celica I believe, and is only 2 door, so maybe too sporty for what you want.

    Thanks to all for your input on this.  I've not found exactly what I wanted but at least there are some options to be had.  Richard is quite right, I do prefer a saloon (and preferebly hard-edged).  What might surprise you though is that one of the cars I've just short-listed is neither a saloon, or hard-edged - lol

    Weird I know, but I'm honestly leaning towards the Roland car with the Iray shader (the Bugatti look-a-like).  It's the opposite of what I had in mind, but it still works as the sort of car that would belong to someone who has plenty of cash, and trust me, the character who'll be driving it has plenty of ill-gotten cash, cause he's a proper wrong-un and he'll love that boot!  It would also look good completely blacked-out and stealth-like, and I absolutely love that split to the design!  The only thing that bugs me about it is the logo on the back.  It looks really nice, but I'm wondering if it's done with geometry or a normal map, and if it's geometry, is it hidable?  Not a biggie, I could always edit the nesh and even create my own adjustment morphs for the car here and there, but I think I would be able to make it look much more stealth-like if it could be hidden.  Also, much as I generally hate rounded-off designs, I make an exception for that one because it doesn't suffer from beziercurvitis, and was clearly designed by someone with a talent for curves!

    The other on the shortlist is of course the Casual Family Sedan, and possibly even the DCRT Muscle Car, which incidentally never showed before, just like a lot of these never showed.  But anyway, so that's three on the shortlist although I'm not doing any buying until the next 50 or 60% off all Daz Originals sale!  I might even buy all three since I don't have any cars at all as far as I'm aware.  Not unless there's some freebie hidden away among some old content that I'm not aware of.

    Thanks again to all for your time, it's very much appreciated!

    The "Roland" text on the back is mesh. It shares a surface with the rest of the chrome on the car, so you wil need to use the geometry editor to give it its own surface, then set the cutout opacity of that to 0. It is a 2 minute job.

    @Havos
    Wow, big thanks for that!  I think it looks absolutely fantastic, and I like it even more now!  It's going to look absolutely killer stealthed-out, that is!

    Gotta be honest though, I really had no idea that the car it's inspired by was such a prominient beast.  I've been reading-up about it, and apparently it's the most powerful, luxury sedan in the world.  Goes by the name of "Bugatti 16C Galibier" and will cost a cool million.  So, definitely a suitible car for the character I have in mind.  I'm guessing a million would be no more than a week's profit to him!

    I'm really saddened there's no MK1 Rover 800 Saloon though (and would still use that instead if one was available).  But to be fair that Bugatti will definitely do.  It does present a problem further down the line though.  Because with a MK1 Rover 800 Saloon, I reckon I could have borrowed one in exchange for giving the owner a part in my live action Indie!  That would mean I get both an actor and the car for free, but I'm doubtful I'd ever be able to persuade a Bugatti 16C Galibier owner to do that.  PS: Is that the same paint shader that comes with the Iray upgrade?  Hope so cause it actually looks like proper paint!

    @FirstBastion
    I was trying to avoid buying from other stores if I could help it, but I did look already, and thanks for the suggestion.  Gonna buy the three I suggested earlier becasue at the end of the day I could still end up using the Casual Family Sedan for all I know (depends on how I choose to work the story).  Plus, I suppose any cars I don't use for the main character, would still come in handy for background cars and other uses etc.

    Yes, the paint I used was from one of those in the Iray expansion set.

    The US used to use sedan and saloon (less often and only for very expensive touring cars) refering to 4 door cars in the 70s and prior but that went out with the horrible and unneeded, spelling changes inflicted on us. Search for car, buggy, auto, automobile, vehicles, coupe, sedan, van, bus, and truck do try and find what you want, although the DAZ Store search engine designers should  let you just type in 4 wheel vehhicle and find all the combinations you might want. You won't  find much in the way of 80s vehicles, as they were mostly ugly and uninspired.

    Thanks for the confirmation, looks very realistic, like actual paint!

    @nonsuch00
    Sorted now.  Haven't bought yet, but next time I buy I'll add the cars to the basket.  I hear you on the search thing and have in fact been doing stuff like that.  I must have unwittingly been under a store filter or something, because there's a lot more showing now than before I asked about it.  Not exactly what I was looking for, but still, definitely doeable.

    Wow, that was cheap!  Just grabbed Car Roland and the Iray Upgrade for a total of $4, so if anyone else has been eyeing it up, it's insanely cheap while that 4-Hour sale is on, and I didn't even use a Token or Voucher to get it to that!

    Crazy, mind you they were both Daz+ items so I suppose that's why.

    This is exactly what the OP means by "fixed in place" . In other words, its Not part of a hatchback.

    Yup, I think the one SapphireBlue mentioned is the one I'll have to use.  I've been playing with Car Roland today, it's and nice model and I'm sure I'll find another use for it, but I won't be using it for this project since the look I wanted just isn't there.
