A little macabre. The challenge description of "Love and Horror, dark gothic romances, scenes of love and despair" seems to have led to this image surfacing in my mind among a few others. But this one was insistent, so I decided to render it first.
A little bit of postwork: a vignette filter, some softening and the slightest touch of a wavy blur to simulate the underwater feel. No AI elements.

Me and My Shadow
Goldleaf and Moonshadow had been courting for almost a month now. They got along very well, and Moonshadow seemed to be a very sweet girl, though she was a little distant and quiet. Goldleaf was very fond of her, and at first they worked well together, protecting the flowers in their territory and helping to keep them healthy and beautiful. But one day, Goldleaf noticed that throughout the blooms, there were always several flowers that seemed to suddenly turn black and wilted. No matter how much care he gave them, they refused to return to their own lovely colors. He had no idea what was happening, until one day he noticed Moonshadow spreading a strange red, glittery magic over a blossom, instead of the usual blue faerie magic. He couldn’t understand what she was doing - was it possible his own dear Moonshadow was up to something sinister?

Love the theme for this challenge - it's so much fun to be dramatic! Worked on this idea this week. The full story might take some 20 renders - hopefully I'll finish them one fine someday.
It's a bit of a Beauty and the Beast/Eros and Psyche/Hades and Persephone mashup. The Devil in this story takes after some of the East European tales incorporating the Devil (seen more like a ruler of Hell, than a representation of all evil) with his little devils collecting sinners' souls at the end of their lives to bring to Hell for the length of time deemed appropriate for their wrong-doings. Devils vary in archetypes in these stories and are just another character like witches and giants. I remember a number of these stories fondly - they were moving, funny, silly and very insightful on humanity's quirks.
In my little story, a man destined for Hell makes a deal with the Devil when he notices that his daughter has caught the Devil's eye. He pleads to get two more years on earth in the hopes that he can redeem himself, and in return he'll give the Devil his daughter's hand in marriage. The Devil accepts as long as the daughter comes willingly and is not told who she is marrying. For the first year of marriage, she'll wear a blindfold whenever in the Devil's company, so she may judge him by her own experience rather than by his fearful reputation. And so the story unfolds...
I'm posting 3 renders. (Postwork in Photoshop for mostly a bit of softening and color grading. No AI elements.) If I happen to do any more this week, I'll put them up in the main thread.
