I cant believe it! I will re-test this later but...
Although I've heard windows readyboost doesnt work very well, I tried out of desperation on my old 4gb ram pc, with *edit* 4gb video card(1gb dedicated) to get a faster iray render. The result on my first test was...
With 4gb readyboost
Total Rendering Time: 9 minutes 22.42 seconds readyboost
-------------
Without readyboost
20+ minutes, I stopped it there
maybe a false alert so I'm gonna load a new scene and try again without browsing the internet -everyone cross your fingers and like, send positive energy and stuff...

next test small scene, default iray dome and no added lighting
Not so good but still a bit faster, later I'll try a scene that would normally cause my pc to shake and get hot
With 4gb readyboost...
Total Rendering Time: 2 minutes 18.94 seconds
-------------
Without readyboost...
Total Rendering Time: 2 minutes 30.93 seconds
It's very likely that you run out of RAM and the render has to use your disk as a buffer. Readyboost might speed up those disk access, makes sense.
As for the second render, it very likely uses less RAM than the first one, so there is not that much buffering on disk, hence the difference is small.
If I understand readyboost correctly,,and it's been awhile since I looked into it.It uses a USB thumbdrive/harddrive to augment disk cache read/writes.This should reduce the disk IO on the main drive due to the pagefile getting used when the system is short on ram.
If your scene takes more than your systems 4GB of ram to render, then readyboost will cache to the USB drive instead of your main drives pagefile. This should improve render speeds and system responsiveness. It's a good thing for smaller systems.I would use it if I was working with 8GB or less and had the thumbdrive to spare.
I used this on my old vista laptop years ago, had a 4GB SD card for it and also added paging file to DDrive and increased size, people told me I was silly but it worked, was 32bit too so did 3G switch and made any stuff that was not largeaddressaware too, DAZ is but Bryce benefits as do some other programs.
scrape where you can, disable aero and fancy folder and window display options too.
I did the benchmark render (linked below) again, its good news for me anyway!
