How Will My New Computer Compare to my Old
in The Commons
I recently placed an order for a new desktop which should arrive sometime at the end of next week.
The specs on it are as followed
- 3.20GHz Intel Core i5-4460 quad-core processor with 6MB cache, up to 3.40GHz
- 8GB dual-channel 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics with 2GB GDDR5 graphics memory
- Windows 8.1
My old Computer was Macbook Pro (laptop) OS X(10.7.5) and the specs are
- 2.4 GHZ Intel Core i5
- 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
- Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 mb
What kind of differences in performance will I be looking at? I previously only rendered with 3Delight because Iray just wasn't an option for me because of my graphics card and weak CPU. Will I notice faster renders in 3delight? Is Iray something that I will be able to play with now?
Also how much of a performance hit will I take now that I only have 8gb of RAM as compared to formerly 16 gb? Thank you for your time

beats me. Let us know when you find out cause your the only one who will.
I don't know anything about Macs but if you aren't going to use the Mac again I would put the 16Gb of ram into the new computer and if it has four slots that will give you 24GB. The memory will run at the slower rate(1333 rather than 1600) but the difference wont be that noticeable because of the extra memory space. Make sure the ram is compatible first though. Check the voltage for a start
I'm still going to use the Mac but i was thinking about upgrading the RAM on the new computer but wasn't sure it'd be worth it since the maximum my new computer supports is 16 gb I believe. I wasn't sure if the performance increase would be enough to justify the money spent
I have an i5 laptop with integrated graphics and I upped the ram from 8 to 16, the max, and it helped a lot with big scenes. Even at that I have maxed out the ram a few times
If you plan on using IRAY, get a desktop, you get more performance for the cash.
Talking to me?
I use this laptop for Iray; I also have a full tower, it needs a new motherboard as the old one is now a few years old, it's the fourth one since I ditched the Amiga 1200 that was in it
I'll do that sometime over the winter.
404, I think you'll see very little change in render times or a slight improvement thanks to the new graphics card.
You will see little if no improvement, maybe even a little less because of your RAM, Iray should work better for you though.
