iray: 30 Minutes - No rendering

ScavengerScavenger Posts: 2,674

I set Iray to render a scene that I have rendered before at the same size.  I had changed some shaders from default iray uber shader to more presie ones I've found.
I then went out for 30 minutes.

When I got back, Daz still said "rendering" but nothing had started, no iterations, nothing.. just the status drop down thing saying "rendering".

To make matters more annoying I tried to cancel the render...and it just still kept with the "rendering".. didn't cancel, but pretty much froze up everything on the computer so I couldn't force quit it, switch programs, anything..mouse still moved, but that was it.

Anyone have any thoughts?

It sounds as if there may be bugs in the shaders, or a problem with the compilation. Do the shaders render if applied to a primitive in an otherwise empty scene?

Are you using the GPU in your graphics card? I had something that sounds just like that in one of my renders. The mouse pointer still moved on the screen but that was all it did, clicking on anything didn't have any effect, there was no response to the keyboard, even control+alt+del didn't work. The only way I could get control back was to switch off with the power button. I had no way of doing any diagnostics but I suspect that Iray was hitting the graphics card so hard it didn't have any processing power left to update the display. Since then I've switched to CPU only and haven't had this again, although I have had some very slow renders.

Yeah, they do. I set up primatives with the new shaders (except for Adam's SkinRay..but that was working in spot renders)..and they rendered fine. (I was concerned that the render engine had become corrupt, rather than thinking that the shaders might have issues.)

I had kept my maps for one of the parts (a side walk texture).  I have let the shader use it's own thing, and it's going now.  But like I said, may maps worked fine in iray before with the default shader on it...this new one I'm pretty sure is just settings of the uber, rather than being some thing of it's own (like the nvida samples).

Another thing to check is Render Settings/Optimization for 'Instancing Optimization', make sure it says Speed and not Memory.

I had a lot of hangups early on with Iray before someone pointed that one out.

Darn.. mine already says speed..I was hoping I found a new secret "Work Better button"

D|S is pretty stable, but I've found that it's still a good idea to restart it at least once a day. I also try to remember to restart my PC every few days, but once in a while, there's a hangup that is resolved by restarting the machine. Don't know if this was your issue, but regular restarts can solve the occasional transient glitch.

Nope...This was done after turning daz on for the first time in a few hours after restrating from daz caused crash.

If you are having problems with your computer locking up I think that optimising for memory is more likely to help. Running out of memory usually causes problems with computers. It might take longer but it is more likely to actually work.

Eek, I hate those scares. A few times that's happened to me it turned out D|S ate its own settings files, and I had to recreate all my customizations.

This last weekend D|S wouldn't restart until I rebooted completely. I could see the program was loading into memory, then nothing -- no init screens, no log, nada. Sweating, I rebooted, and it worked okay.

So from your follow-up it's now rendering, but you're back to more standard shaders; is that correct?

No.. the only real change is using the shader's maps rather than my own that  I was using with 3 delight.
