IRay settings for decent definition in ~10 min?
Hi all,
I really like the detail and all the new features that come with the IRay renderer and have started playing around with it quite a bit. It's really cool that more light makes it render faster.
Anyway, I'm pretty impatient when it comes to renders. When using 3DLight I generally set up my scene so that it'll render in ~5-10 minutes. I see some of you guys rendering for 4+ hours and it blows me away! I guess it's different styles, though. I like to do comic-book style renders. Same objects / characters in the same few scenes. Even 30 minutes per render would really put a damper on my workflow!
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of setting tweeks to increase render speed without sacrificing quality too much. I currently am just using the defaults with the opitex option and my graphics card selected in the Advanced settings. I am rendering exclusively in 1920x1080.
I have an Nvidia 780 GTX, 16 GB of RAM and an i7-4770k OC @4.5 Ghz.
My current scene has 4 spot lights, 1 point light in a single room and the skydome.
Thanks!

You've got a pretty respectable video card there. Have you considered adding a second? I know it sounds like an expensive proposition, but it may be worth the investment if you're talking about workflow. The Iray render engine, like Octane Render can utilize more than one video card. From what you've posted, I can see that you've got quality components. When I was working more with 3delight, I was really dissatisfied with the render time. Changing from using the built in lighting from DAZ helped a lot, but the wait time was agonizing. Finally, I just broke down and build a beefier system. It was a huge expense, but after seing that time go down to ten/fifteen minutes, I was happy. Now that we have Iray, I'm forced to look at making the move again to getting components that can really cook with the new render engine.
I'm looking at getting two or the gtx 980 Ti's or a couple of GTX Titan Xs. Yes, it's a hell of an expenditure, but my it's my dime.
The only other thing I might suggest is look for lights and lighting that's specifically engineered for Iray. But really when it boils down to it, you're going to get the best improvement by improving your hardware in this instance. Adding a second GTX 780 will defininitely cut down the wait.
The easiest way to render faster scenes in iRay is to use less lights. The first thing I'd try to do is figure out why you have four spot lights, 1 point light, and a (assumed emitting) skydome. Have you tried using a meshlight of some sort?
Another way is to decrease the path length, though it may affect your lighting setup negatively. If you're on interactive renders, you can also change the maximum number of bounces too.
Are you aware of the OptiX Prime Acceleration option on the NVIDIA Iray Render Settings? It's on the Advanced tab, Hardware sub-tab. Enabling it does result in faster render times for me.
Yeah, I have a 780 GTX, which is roughly in line with your 980.
I'll try that. I've never actually used a mesh light. The spotlights are a holdover from my 3Dlight days. For lamps I've always done a point light and a spotlight combo. The scene is supposed to be a house interior, so the lights are for house lighting, even though I only have 3 walls at a time, to give me visibility and the ambient light from the dome.
