Lens Thickness?

I tried searching the forums but no information on what this does. To my eye it doesnt seem to do anything but obviously it does something or it wouldnt be there i guess. Anyone have a clue?

The only thing that I can find on it is this:

Added lens thickness control to basic camera; physically based active renderer; dynamically hidden.
