Gen 9 Sharing What I've Created and Any Merchant Resources??

Hi all :)

If I only use a default genesis 9 figure as my sculpt base can I share the morph I have created from that freely? (For example if I create an adam's apple morph, belly button, different nose shapes, or just different head shapes) Also if I were to take the included essentials skins can I edit them in PS and share them? (kind of assuming this one is a no). And are there any merchant resources available for Genesis 9 that I may have missed? Thanks in advance!

Yes, so long as you import the morph with reverse deformation so you aren't distributing the actual Genesis 9 Base Figure.

I'm not 100% sure on this one so you're better off writing in a ticket to DAZ and getting their official response.

Thank you! I appreciate you taking time to answer. I know you do a lot of skin stuff (which btw thank you for that as well  because I have many of your assets and love them!) When you create your skin transitions is there a template you work with and/or just in another layer over the default essentiels skin in photoshop? (I've only ever edited skin files someone else created for my own use ).

  • To the best of my knowledge you can't share the textures and maps for any of the models, they are Daz only and not redistributable.

The only G9 skin texture MR available on the Daz Store so far is SY Flexible Skins and Merchant Resource for Genesis 9 | Daz 3D.  There are none at Renderosity.

Was hoping to find some merchant resources for fine toning shapes but so far only finding them for skin- but thank you for the link adding it to the wishlist :)

Thanks for the support! I hand-paint with a tablet directly over the base character in substance painter. I only use photoshop for laying out stuff for promos and tweaking textures produced with Substance Painter.

    There's also https://www.daz3d.com/raw-skins-3-merchant-resource-textures-for-genesis-9 from RawArt.

Thank you all- apparently I missed a few here since Merchant Resource wasn't in the title- it looks like SF-Design has some shape morphs sold as merchant resources like https://www.daz3d.com/face-morph-kit-for-genesis-9 which is perfect as I'm just starting out with sculpting and some finer tuning  after would be helpfulblush typically with merchant resources I see not allowed to be distributed for free- in general does that mean I can't make something like say a dress or face and include the merchant resource unless I am selling it or no giving away the Merchant resource assets as-is free? I plan on double checking this in the readme if I purchase but just trying to get an overall idea.

@FenixPhoenix That sounds like a more intuitive way of editing skin than flat in photoshop. Do you have a guide somewhere on importing Daz assets into Substance to work on or a resource you found useful for learning?

It's my understanding that morphs created using an external modelling program like zbrush or hexagon can be shared via the the morph files for the morph found in the data folder. If they are small morphs like adam's apple you possibly could get away without providing a pose preset as well especially with a freebie. The morph needs to be saved at zero and then saved as a pose preset at the percentage you wish people to use it at.

If you are sharing dialled morphs you need to save it as a shape preset.

To my knowledge reverse deformation is mainly used when you are importing the morph into the program from the external modeller and you aren't using the default genesis shape. That said Genesis 9 has some interesting developer tools accessed from the parameters tab that have alternate methods for genesis male and female shapes I suggest you look for mada's thread on developing for genesis 9 as she had some useful tips which should make the process easier for you.

Yes, each merchant decides how they allow the resource to be used by the purchaser, so you're better off checking the readme for each product before using it. If a MR says it cannot be used in the creation of freebies, that typically signals that the creator doesn't want the MR to lose some of its value if someone were to use it in many freebies. There's also an assumption that someone who's doing something for free might not care to edit or build atop the MR enough, since they won't want to invest too much time on it, and thereby may even distribute the MR with little to no change. Whatever the reason may be, each vendor gets to decide on the usage of the MR. But yes, if it says you cannot use it in the creation of freebies, then you simply cannot/should not circumvent the issue. You would be better off finding an MR without that limitation.

Since you're familiar with photoshop, you'll find Substance Painter quite intuitive since Adobe bought it and has implemented similar things to photoshop. I frankly learned my way around it by experimenting and then watching videos found on youtube. With each project, I learn something new, so I'm always learning as I go. That said, Jay made a tutorial showing how to create Face & Body Painting for DAZ Characters with Substance Painter which may be a really good place to start, as he explains everything in a simple way and covers many of the basic functions.

wink Definitely not intending to include any MR without thoroughly understanding how each creator is allowing use just wondering if I was understanding the general statement I was seeing on many about freebies. Thankfully some have more info in the free to view/read readmes while a few others may have more info in the downloadables after purchase(?). Wasn't sure if there was a general MR rule somewhere like the editorial one. I can definitely see where that might be a concern someone not making many changes with the included MR and possibly making a competeting product that is free. Trying to limit what I get for Gen 9 so it is primarily just MR and I can learn more about sculpting as my gen8.1 /8 are painfully slow loading with all the morphs and things I've gotten over the years for them. I'll definitely check out Jay's webinar and hunt down that thread with Mada (thanks @Pendraia). I imagine Mada probably has a lot of great insight to share considering just how many assets have been released by Mada.
