What does the "specular shader" included with many Mousso characters do?

A whole bunch of Mousso's G8 characters have a "specular shader" included, but there's no explaination of what this is or why we should/should not use it. Can anyone help clarify?

A few examples:

Specularity is another word for gloss/shine.

so the specular shader makes the characters shinier?

It controls the way the figure reacts to the lighting and is viewpoint dependent.

Prior to having shader systems in DS it was reliant on baked in highlights. A specular shader controls how the mesh reacts to the lighting and will change from the direction you view it.

...another misuse of the word shader, should be specular shader preset...unless it truly is a new and innovative MDL shader that handles specular highlights differently than the IRayUber shader...
