DAZ Install Nightmare

Myn Friday night has turned into a nightmare thanks to DAZ Install Manager. DIM has decided to reinstall the "default" stuff that gets installed when you first run DIM. That must be done before you can do anything else. Why must this stuff be installed again?!

The majority of stuff gets installed, but very slowly. But I'm having trouble installing DAZ Studio itself. I'm prompted for a password, and I can't seem to find the right password. Which password does it want?! Is it my DAZ Account password? Or my Macintosh computer user password, or my Apple Account password?! Please, DAZ, don't make things so hard. Help.

When installing a program it is normally the Apple call that you must use your Mac password to install it. Same for most programs that go in the Applications folder

You might be right about general requirements. But this is a specific prompt within a DAZ install process, The "prompt" screen bears a DAZ "stamp." Hopefully someone out there has more specific information about how DIM works, and what it wants.

That sounds like a Mac issue, needing to authorise an application to make chnages or to run, rather than anything Daz has done. If it had forgotten everything it is possible that the issue is the manifests folder (access to or location of) in which DIM/Daz Central record their actions.

My content has been installing for about 24 hours. Maybe it will be done by tomorrow morning. OK, I'm using a "re-conditioned" i5 iMac, It's mainly used for "goofing around." I likely won't do any serious DAZ art with it. I have a wonderful, powerful PC for serious work. It makes short work out of everything I throw at it. But I haven't had the "artistic bug" for about. a year.smiley

Ron, where a Windows computer will just give you a screen to click authorize when you install a program or a plug-in, I have found my MacBookPro M1 needs my password for every program or plug-in during an install session, or an update to them.

Drives me a bit nuts because I have to 'think' what my password is on that computer as DIM & Daz Studio both love to crash on it for no apparent reason, so I don't often use it. Took me 9 hours yesterday to recover my external hard drive D|S lives on. So I work mostly on my Win10 computers.

I totally understand. You have my sympathy regarding the hard drive difficulties. I'm using my iMac mostly just to cruise the web, play solitaire and have fun.

I have this every once in a while. Sometimes, the Postgres database engine seems to shut down for no obvious reason. On startup, DIM kind-of pings the database for a response, and the database is not responding fast enough. Usually, I it should not be necessary to follow that install of basics. Just quit DIM, wait a few seconds and start it again. You might have to try that two or three times in a row. I suppose the system needs some time to re-start the database, and as long as DIM is not getting any feedback on its initial "ping", it assumes the database engine is not installed - and the assumption is extended to the other base files as well.

If you experience that password prompt, it is the DAZ install helper that is required for non-content installs (e.g. DS itself). As that installer needs to write to protected areas, it requests the macOS password of the user that has admin privileges on the DS appliaction folders  - usually the macOS user that has initially installed DS.

Note: if you DO install the postgres db again, it wipes out all your previous smart content data, and you end up with an empty smart content panel in DS. In that case, try Content DB maintenance -> re-import metadata

I finally got everything installed, and ignored everything after. I never use "Smart Content," since it is really useless to me.
