While there have been some around, indeed I think I have them somewhere even, the problem with using them is the risk of being sued by George Lucas!!!
I dare say for that reason the ones I downloaded are no longer available and I certainly would not render them.

I don't think George could sue you anymore, but Disney might have something to say about it! :)
I don't believe either are likely to sue as long as credit is given where credit is due. Fan art is usually accepted in good spirits, it's just when someone tries to pass it off as their own stuff that problems will arise.
Hm ... I never thought about that. George Lucas was pretty easy going with fan works as long as nobody made any profit from it and credit to the creator was properly given. Disney, on the other hand, has been known to go absolutely bat-poop crazy over anything & everything they claim to own the rights to and have sued people for the most non-commercial, even possibly non-infringing uses. Now that they own the Star Wars franchise, it may very well become a dark time for us poor fans who only want to play around with our lightsabers.
No, not really. Disney goes after things when the law requires them too....or lawyers or bored. Same as ALL IP holders. There's been no abridgements of Marvel fan art since Disney took them, been no issues with Star Wars stuff.
Play things right, respect copyright and trademark, for whatever's sake don't try to sell stuff as official. (there's a huge grey area in like pritns and t-shirts of dA stuff...) and you'll be fine. (I'd say avoid porn, but that doesnt' seem to be deal breaker anymore, either).
Huh? Anything over PG13 -- and sometimes even under if it involved "slash" -- used to be a pretty big deal breaker, irc, although some owners didn't mind (had a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy) provided it wasn't publicized and kept out of the reach of the kiddies via private mailing lists and password protected, age restricted sites.

As a Disney Stockholder, and thus an owner of the company, I hereby give you permission to make Star Wars renders and fan art.
(Note: said permission may not be legally binding and will likely not be useful when an army of mouse ear wearing lawyers take away your house.)
