Selling a gtx/rtx - does it contain data?

I might have asked this before, please apologize if its a double post.

I want to sell my gtx/rtx, and don't know if the cards store data e.g. renderings or screen content.

Nvidia said no in general,  but maybe its vendor specific? some cards appear to have customizable leds/panels, and for that e.g. you need some persistent memory after all?

Thanks

  • No, graphics cards do not store any actual user date when powered off. Some models may remember the led configuration, but even those are mostly handled with drivers.

The RAM used in cards can NOT store data as it is what's known as Volatile Memory - meaning that it looses data when it looses power.

I'm not aware of anything on current cards that do store data, but that isn't to say that wont happen in the future.

  • If the card has been used for Crypto-Mining, you might tap it on the side to see if any coins fall out!!

Seriously, video cards are not a storage media and will not retain any data.

But they do have some non volatile memory, the firmware has to be stored on something.

But the only thing thats on there is the firmware, no user data
