OOT Hair Rendering Black

Has anyone else run into this issue with OOT hair rending black since updating to 4.16? I've tried multiple OOT hairs and they all render black now. Pretty sure it's a shader issue because I applied another hair shader and it rendered the hair correctly. Just wondering if this is specific just to me or a known issue and if so, is there a fix? I did a search on the forums but couldn't find anyone else reporting the issue so it's likely specific.

There is a top coat thin film bug that causes it to darken every shader that uses it. I believe it is a bug in Iray itself and not a DS problem so Nvidia will have to fix before the DS folks can. I think it's Nvidia's bug anyway. LOL

I had the same issue which I brought up here https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/534316/hair-rendering-weirdness-fixed#latest .. Doing a complete clean install of Daz Studio should help, as it had for me although I had to reinstall Windows after it went south on me..

  • Okay, thanks for the replies. Played around with the shader settings including the top coat settings with no luck. Did a reinstall of DAZ with no luck. I have the old G2 OOT shader mentioned by Ghosty12 in their thread and that did at least make the hair renderable although I will need to tinker with the shader quite a bit to update it and get the cap to render correctly. If this is an Nvidia issue then I hope they resolve it soon as most hair I use is OOT.

  • What GPU and driver are you using? I have 4.12, 4.15, and 4.16 installed in their own folders (using a shared library), RTX 2070 Super using driver 472.08. I don't get the black render issue. Maybe a GPU/driver issue?

  • Using 1080ti and the latest driver 497.09. I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago (but have been too busy to look into it) using the previous driver 472.08. I'd say it has something to do with 4.16 because I never had an issue with it before updating DAZ. I'll work around it for now as I can get the hair to render using the older OOT shader.

I would say a possible driver issue, as I had the same problem with the 4.15+ version of Studio.. I am using Nvidia's GRD 496.76 driver on my 3060, the strange thing is though after having to reinstall Windows and thus Daz Studio and the issue for me went away..

I'm not sure it's a bug per se, but a change in the behaviour. Like the ghost light issue, nVidia can argue that the new behaviour is more physically accurate (though I do think that allowing the old behaviour for legacy scenes would be sensible).

...I had the same results not just to hair which I used Slosh's UHT2 hiar shading system but also skin created with Zevo's Skin Builder using the recommended driver for GPU rendering mentioned in the 4.16 beta release thread. Both make use of the thin coat channel. Setting it to 0 cures the matter..

It is the weirdest of things though as before I had to reinstall Windows and Studio, I had no idea about the Top Coat issue.. Where I also had this issue was with Ultrascenery, where certain wood elements and if having a water feature in scene the rocks as well would render black.. After reinstalling Windows and Studio the issue went away, so no idea why it did it then but not now though not complaining.. lol

Well it seems that the issue has come back, very frustrating..

Has there been any progress on this issue. I just noticed the same problem. All OOT hair rendering black.

I'm on a 3090 with 511.65 drivers, Daz 4.16 (64-bit). I completely uninstalled and wiped all Daz related files and reinstalled. No fix there. Changing any shader setting doesn't fix it. Also I don't even see Top Coat Thin Film.

This is a pretty big issue for me as a third or so of my hair assets are OOT, and I don't have that many overall.

Using a different shader like ColorWerks is a workaround, but usually I'll use the native shaders if they're good enough.

...I just test rendered a character with OOT's Rochelle Ponytail Hair for G3 in the latest beta (5.16.1.40) and everything rendered fine. In looking at the details thread on the new beta an update of Iray was included where they apparently made some adjustments to the Thin Film channel so it renders the correct colour again without having to turn it off.  I also did some render tests two days ago of the other characters that were rendering dark and they all look normal again.

Is that a mistype or is there a beta of Studio 5?

Great news, kyoto. Thanks for confirming. Remember when they told you this was a feature and not a bug and you'd have to live with it? wink

For what it's worth, confirming that updating to latest NVIDIA studio drivers fixed the issue for me.  (Using RTX 3090, driver was dated August 8th or 9th, 2022).
