Neverending story....

November 2021 in Non-Fungible Token (NFT) Art

Directly from the Daz blog: https://blog.daz3d.com/daz-3d-joins-with-rtfkt-as-technical-partner-for-clonex-nft-avatars/

I suppose we will have to wait until that whole NFT scheme implodes. Common sense seems and "business opportunities" seem to be incompatible.

Much like their attempt to make encrypted content a thing, they'll keep throwing money into NFTs until they can't hide how unprofitable they are.

Someone needs to translate "marketing speak" to real world; I'm confused as to how an expensive link to an avatar makes sense. Especially since I have no intention whatever of using the same avatar for multiple enviroments.

Daaaang, and I came in here expecting Atreyu and Falcor.  :D

As for the concept of an own, custom avatar that comes with you cross-platform... this one wouldn't be the first time someone's tried to make something like this, and probably won't be the last time.

The new CloneX avatars strive towards a collection where their owners can take them wherever they go—into movies, games, animation and much more, in whatever metaverse they choose.

I do appreciate that a large part of the gaming industry that wasn't paying attention before is currently saying, "Wait, what?" because no one can explain how the majority of games are going to become capable of exchanging assets back and forth and it's even harder to explain why any developer would benefit from doing this or how it would not turn games into glorified VRChat, basically.

What does being able to take them into movies and animation mean? From watching the video they mention stuff that can just be done with a bridge between programs. So there are two possibilities I can see off the top of my head here:

    • Daz is perfectly okay with implying that in the future, you will need to spend money on exclusive digital goods to do what you can do for free now, or
    • The "features" of these avatars are things you can do with a regular Daz model (or basically any .obj), and all they're doing is selling a limited run of little generic anime figures.

I have bets on it being the second and will be stoked to Matrix-warp into the metaverse every time I fire up GoZ.

Good god, they sound utterly insufferable. Is this what it feels like to get old?

I will say this... rtfcks (or whatever) sell "digital sneakers", and DAZ sells (amongst other things) "digital clothes", so from a certain angle the collab (or whatever's being announced here - I can't quite figure it out) isn't that strange.

Then you remember that DAZ sells tools for illustrators.

It took me forever to decipher what rtfcks is about. As far as I can tell, they sell digital assets... that your... avatar? might? be able to wear... someday? on platforms that... don't exist yet? but certainly??? will one day!!!
All while doing a merry hypercapitalist (metacapitalist?) dance on what's left of our crumbling planet. Wheee!

Considering these avatars don't work and cannot work with the Steam ecosystem, I see this going exactly nowhere.

Daz's next thing they're tweeting about appears to be NFT profile pictures you can take into Unity and Blender!!! which as far as I can tell means they're headshot renders of Daz characters and you probably get the DO assets visible in the pics.

They've also just started retweeting NFT stuff that has nothing to do with Daz, so I finally unfollowed.
