I don't think you can, as such, since Carrara offers more options for rigging than Poser or DS did and wouldn't write the latest Poser format files for its weight-mapping. 8.5 might write to .duf in a form that could be used in DS4.5, though I don't know how many features would be supported.

scenes with replicators would need real instances
trees full mesh in the model room option
proceedural shaders do not transfer over
that said a lot of the browser models export quite well
with terrains a top render in Carrara to use as the diffuse map works quite well
export from Carrara as obj your best option, tends to work better imported into Poser and saved as a Poser prop for Daz studio.

Export an OBJ file. I don't know why everyone else is saying otherwise, but a couple of semesters back when I had to take a course in Poser (for the Game Development program I'm pursuing), in one class we had to export a furniture scene from Carrara into Poser. I don't recall the exact details of the step-by-step process, but we had no problem doing so.

I have a tutorial that covers converting files for use in DS and Poser and it has a section on Carrara - http://forumarchive.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=177565

Thank you all!! :) I used this awesome link and converted my files!! Thank you!

  • found this thread with a subject search but it now seems the tutorial that teaches how to convert Carrara files to D Studio is broken.   Has it been moved somewhere ....?    if so, would appreciate the update...     thxs !

Can't help with Matty's tutorial, but here's a rough and ready workflow:

If you have Carrara-specific objects (such as trees, oceans, terrains), you'll need to convert them to Vertex models first.

Export your models one at a time as OBJ. Leave the default options selected.

In Studio, import each OBJ one at a time. Select Carrara from the drop down list of presets. In the Surfaces tab you can assign the texture maps and settings, You may need to tweak the values as different renderers are never an exact match.

Select each item that you've imported in turn and Save As -> Support Asset -> Figure / Prop Assets. This sets up the asset files (mesh, UVs) in a Data\"My Project" folder

Finally Save As -> Scene to save your scene.

It gets a little more complicated if you want to do rigging, or create morphs, instances etc. But that sould get you up and running with the basics.

They should just make a Carrara -> DS bridge like they did with Bryce and Hexagon.

@TangoAlpha has great info on objects that are not rigged.

For objects that have Carrara rigging, I believe @the3Digit has had some success going from Carrara to Studio.  Perhaps FBX format? For myself, I created two riggings for the same mesh, a Carrara rigging and a Daz Studio rigging.  Both work in Carrara.
