Is Daz Studio now called Daz Central?

When I go to the web page to dowload Daz Studio, I find that there is no Daz Studio to download. Instead, I find myself on a web page to download Daz Central, and ONLY Daz Central. So I am left to wonder: Has Daz Studio changed its name to Daz Central?

No. Daz Central is one of Daz 3D's (the company) install managers, through which you can get Daz Studio.

That's what I thought Daz Central was.

My next question is: How can I download Daz Studio? - WITHOUT having to download Daz Central?

Go to your Account, and into your Product Library. All the installers should be available there under Daz Studio 4.X Pro.

I strongly recommend use of an install manager - either Daz Central, or Daz Install Manager.

It makes it much easier to keep products up-to-date (you'll be notified when you start the program - note that the install managers do not spend their entire time running as a background process), and also means that uninstalling products with issues is considerably less horrific a task (very occasionally, a product will get through testing with issues that can break the program, and often the fix is to uninstall them until an update is released).

DAZ Central is dumbed down version of DIM for new users, which installs everything under one folder (on C:\ if you are not careful)

There are a ton of tutorials on how to use DIM. In my opinion it is the better to use because you can customize where you want thing to go. It pretty much just gives you more option. I'd only do it though if your familiar with how things are installed within Daz Studio otherwise you can lose stuff and can be a bear to find without looking up the file paths.

Products are very easy to look up with DIM though. You just right-click on the item name (after it's installed) in DIM and select show installed files. It's a lifesaver and one reason why I vastly prefer DIM.

Another reason to use DIM is that scripts and plug-ins often need it to install correctly and work, where if they are installed by Daz Central or manually they won't work.

As someone whose C: drive is maxed out on one computer, I recommend not only content installing on your larger drives D: or F: (whichever designation you have) but see if you can install your program as well. I am not sure it is possible, but I wish I had. All the Daz3D files for the program are giving me fits, along with other artistic programs.

It appears to me that those who are new to DAZ will look at the top menu bar of any DAZ web page and see A menu option with the words 'Download Studio'. Look now yourself and see where it takes you. THE ONLY PROGRAM MENTIONED ON THAT PAGE IS DAZ CENTRAL. No download of Studio is mentioned anywhere. What are new users expected to think? As Lukon says, they will think DAZ Studio == DAZ Central. No better way possible to put them off. Well done web designer.

Well if you are a new user you probably would want to start with Daz Central. It is suggested that you use one of the 2 forms of installers to install Daz Studio because you can get all updates as soon as they are offered and doesn't have to take word of mouth that there is an update or even a new version and the same goes for all the products. If your a NU then you probably would want to start out with what is suggested. I do however think that there should be a notation that you can also obtain the installer through your product library for those who prefer.

I am afraid I find it impossible to agree in any way, shape or form with you about this, frank0314. However, I shall leave it here, feeling that the wrong choice has been unerringly made.

That should have been self-evident to whoever created the link, but apparently not.

Now even old users think, DAZ Central is the new and only way to install DS and the results can be seen here on the forums every day, and not in a positive way.

I tried Central once and it messed with my old PC so badly that I had to make a new setup of the whole system. Since then Central is the one way I never will recommend to anyone. Quite the contrary I discourage its use. Especially for those who use script products. DIM is the way I prefer.

I have always installed scripts and plugins manually and have never had a problem with them working, I have never needed to use any of the download apps, except twice, one for a product that you can't get unless you use one of the apps, the second was a dll or something I had missing in my program and there was no other way to install it.

Daz Central wouldn't let me install any of my content until I had installed Daz. But Daz was already installed. It was annoying that it couldn't tell that, and that it was trying to force me.

DAZ Central is not the best choice to install products. Especially the products containing scripts tend to fail miserably when installed with DAZ Central. After it has been messing up my machine quite often, I now wouldn't touch it with a very long pole.

I think you mean Connect (installing through Daz Studio).

  • jjoynerjjoyner Posts: 748

I avoid DAZ Connect at all costs with the few exceptions of content that DAZ Studio only sees on my system if it is installed via Connect; I've had about two dozen out of more than 2,000 items go this way.  DIM would install those few items, but they still appeared in DAZ Studio as uninstalled.  I've seen DAZ Central but don't like it much; that plus the fact that it will not install on my older laptop because of hardware issues.  I much prefer DIM because of its flexibility.

Daz Connect is good just no process check the metadata before putting the files on the server.

But it seems Daz prefer to develop a third Download Manager and let the Support team fix manually hundreds of products one by one.

    The errors are :

    • Wrong / Broken URL
    • Unexpected special character
    • Too long path
    • Missing files

There is no content that is Connect only.

There used to be, and that was the only reason I ever used Connect. The DRM protected stuff was Connect only but I haven't seen any of that lately, has it been discontinued? I think all of the original DRM protected stuff eventually changed to standard installers.

They stopped the DRM protection in 2018

That may be true; however, like jjoyner, I have a score or more products that would not show up in Studio even though they had been installed with DIM---but they were available from Connect.

  • jestmartjestmart Posts: 4,449

Then you did it wrong.  With the exception of few products that did have broken install files everything I have ever installed through DIM has shown up in Studio's Content Library pane.  I have never relied on Smart Content (which isn't) so if it does not show up there I don't give a rodent's rear.

  • nicsttnicstt Posts: 11,715

Don't like either Connect or Central - and don't get me started on not-so-Smart content.

DIM does what it says on the tin, and is easy to use and kept seperate from Studio.

I'm looking forward to DIM getting killed off as then I wont be buying any more items; presuming it does get killed off of course.
