..I wonder about that as well.  I get one person over on ZDNet telling me to do so, but I am not a business.

'Simplify IT and save. Windows 10 is our last major Windows system release. With Windows as a service, we’re beginning the journey to simplify the delivery and management of Windows, while providing the most flexible management and deployment options today. With One Windows, we have one app platform, one security model, and one management approach that can reduce complexity and save costs.'

I remember when apps or applications were called programs...

Scroll down the page for how to buy, it's all to do with volume licencing, I don't even try to understand it, but then I did 3rd line support not sales...

I've seen how Microsoft Windows 10 tries to hijack my computer into using MS Edge. But I just slap it into sense a few times and it's over. The same goes for "PDF" files. I have yet to see anything that MS tries to sneak into Windows that warrants extra effort or prevention. In the end, I believe computing should be as easy as possible.

Yeah that was just a one-off, with the altered reference to PDF files, but irritating just the same. sad

Windows 10 seems more stable, despite the noticeable overhead.

I have a hard drive that boots Windows 7 and it has something called "Wild Tangent Games" on it which appears to occupy at least a few gigabytes of disk space. I have yet to spend any time learning all about WDT and I am able to happily retire the problem drive, but still... urrrgh.  Sneakware!

...the above two posts further underscore why I've held out.

MS are not the only ones. I gave up on Apple some time ago because they were engineering the user-base towards an Apple-only universe. The lovely 27 inch iMac that I adored had to go in order for me to find the cash for an IRay capable PC. And Google keeps nagging me to change to Chrome every time I find myself in the Googleverse. And let's not get started on Adobe and the ever-expanding trend they kicked off towards subscription-only software. What next? I think they are going to try to force us into cloud-based apps so that nothing at all is private.

...MS is already working on that with Azure.

Yeah, when Octane 4 and Marvelous Designer 10 went subscription only I gave up on them. as in the long run, it's like having a siphon hooked up to your bank account.

The only Google nag I get is on my phone to update the Android version of Chrome (which I rarely use save for a couple sites).  Not even sure the newest version is supported by Android 5.1. but I can't seem to get rid of the nagware.  Not about to dump money into a new phone as I pretty much only have it for emergency contacts.

Hmmm, I opened those after having previously set those to off for both Live Tiles and Edge Browser (PC & Mobile!) but when I tried it for the new task bar browser it didn't guide me to how to turn that junk off yet again for their latest attempt at coraling me. Anyway, how many times, in how many incarnations, do I have to tell Microsoft I don't want their news feeds or those of any of their "partners"?

Not terribly impressed, but then I believe in the "KISS Principle".

I wonder how Microsoft will handle upgrades this time around.  With Windows 7, they forced the Windows 10 upgrade onto their users and nagged them for months. They tried to sneak it onto your computer through Windows updates.  I remember I had to delete certain files to stop this from happening.  Will Microsoft play the same tricks and force Windows 11 onto their Window 10 users without their consent?

...yeah little was mentioned about that in the presentation, save for that they would occur in "background" which doesn't make me feel any better, in some cases worse.

I have bought too many DAZ 3D products in the past year; yes, I know, you're really surprised, and now I need to buy a 2TB M.2 PCIe 3x 4 NVMe SSD as my system drive and leave all my DAZ products and installers on my existing 2TB SATA III SSD but I won't until Windows 11 is released because I want to clean install so why bother clean installing Windows 10 with Windows 11 just a few months out?

My Windows 10 "news feed" is blank on machines that are not connected to the internet. One of these loads Edge, over and over. Arrrgh.

Interesting about the upcoming "Windows 11" - news to me any way you slice it. Ha ha, I read about it first in the DAZ!

Typing about piecemeal updates and whatnot, I did not understand the Windows 10 process which (correct me if I'm wrong) was or is monthly, for a year? What's up with that I wonder.

If you search for something like malware OR sneakware OR bad "Wild Tangent Games" (include the quotes) one of the first references is to a short thread in Answers dot Microsoft dot com - the "Microsoft Community". Heh I did not know there was one, eg. I thought Mt. Doom in Redmond erupts on its own from time to time, and that is where operating systems come from. sad Other search references suggest it came "pre-loaded" with Windows 8.

The recent post about Apple made me think of "iTunes" where the book section is iOS only. This question is OT but I am curious if Apple's book format is is any better than regular e-books.

When they announced that you will be able to use mobile programs natively for windows 11, I admit, I really cannot wait to get my hands on it as I would love to retire bluestack!

..for me when one person commented on a major tech journal:..

Wow! I can hardly wait! More stuff to play with and learn about.

...it wasn't sarcasm, it was serious.

    I want less not "more".

Well some more info on Windows 11 and well some folks me included may need a system or GPU upgrade to run it.. As even with my system shown in my sig, the Win 11 checking tool says my system won't run it..  Seems that it could be my 1070Ti is probably the problem, as the GPU requirements for Win 11 are a DX12 compliant GPU..

A Wild Tangent Game game and Wild Tangent Store/Update App came preinstalled on the Windows 10 HP Pavilion I got last June 2020 but I uninstalled it all.

My thread was closed, so I'm posting this here in case anyone wants to discuss.

Windows 11 was unveiled yesterday and will require two components:  A TPM 2.0 module and an 8th Gen or newer Intel or AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer CPU.

The TPM module in particular is causing a lot of confusion because few people know or understand what it is.  I had never heard of it myself until I read an article about the WIndows 11 unveiling on Thurrott.com.  MS has an overview about it but in a nutshell it protects your PC or laptop from hardware-based security threats.  Tom's Hardware Guide explains why Windows 11 won't work without it and how to use WIndows to see if you have one.

MS released a PC Health app you can install to see if your device meets Windows 11's hardware requirements.  Below are links to the app and the list of CPUs Windows 11 will support:

    Supported Intel CPUs

    Supported AMD CPUs

PC Health App - When you run the app, it may present you with a list of other options to check, including a prompt to sign in to MS.  All you need do is click the blue button to check for Windows 11 compatibility and you'll get a near immediate response.

On a personal note, I'm out of luck on two fronts:  My Z87-Pro mobo has a TPM connector but no module, and my Core i7-4770K isn't supported.  MS will discontinue support for Windows 10 in 2025.  I won't be be able to upgrade to Windows 11 unless I can buy a new PC by then, and I don't see that happening.

You might be able to enable TPM in BIOS. I have a similar setup to the one described in this article. MY (newish) PC also fails the MS Health Check due to lack of TPM (not that I care - I don't think I will move to Win11 in the near future).

Already checked.  There's no TPM setting; and that was before learning my CPU isn't compatible anyway, either.

I just built a new, beefy computer late last year, and there is a TPM key made for my motherboard, but it appears to be out of stock absolutely everywhere.

  • RL_MediaRL_Media Posts: 339

Yeah, I built one too, didn't see nothin bout no TPM stuff. Will have to look in my mobo manual sometime. Microsoft seems to be doing all they can to make sure their new OS isn't mainstream anymore :P

So there is a global chip shortage and MS decided that every PC running Windows needed a TPM chip?

According to the linked stories these chips cost around $5.

Anyone got a good guess how much they'll be in the next couple weeks, months?

I'm guessing $500, maybe closer to $1,000 as time gets closer for Windows 11 release.

It appears COVID is to blame.  From an article on NeoWin:

When COVID hit and all businesses sent their workers home, Microsoft Teams experienced a gigantic uptick in usage, naturally. But a lot of these users were either on home computers without a TPM or on the cheapest laptops that could be sourced at a moment's notice...

From a security posture standpoint, there is a wide gulf between a fully updated and software-hardened Windows 10 Pro machine running on a cheap laptop versus a business laptop with a TPM and BitLocker enabled in hardware.

Right now, one of the biggest threats facing Azure AD-native organizations that run on commercial hardware is something called a Pass-the-PRT-attack. This allows someone with a machine logged into Azure AD to start authenticating against those services, even bypassing multi-factor authentication in a lot of common configurations. On a machine with no TPM, this token is stored on disk, and without BitLocker, it can be grabbed a bunch of different ways, online and offline. With BitLocker and a TPM, you are basically restricted to grabbing it from memory during an active session.

Apparently I need to upgrade to Windows 10 to run the health app to see if my systems will run Windows 11. I pass.

Is TPM something I should have activated while still using Windows 10 if my motherboard has the chip?

  • Seven193Seven193 Posts: 1,141

Are TPM 2.0 chips already out of stock, like a RTX 3080?  Oops, bad deal Microsoft.
