Are Dogz's railroad tracks compatible with other trains?

Greetings,
Does anyone know if The Old Railway tracks are the same width as TheAntfarm's The Borderline (which is the same wheel width as the PC trains!)?

Hey ho,
I don't know as I don't own Antfarms Borderline, but some good news is that I did think to include a 'gauge' morph for my railway tracks so you can adjust the width of them for other vehicles.
If the morph doesn't make the tracks narrow or wide enough, you can always try to increase its max and min values (beyond the limits set by me) in the morph settings -but you will get some texture distortion if you do it too much.
Anyway this morph is supplied for the track prop on all 3 of my sets.
hope this helps.
Oh hold up, I got Parkside passenger car so let me test for you real quick.
Yikes! the PS car is a very narrow Gauge, the Thumper is much wider, and it was that which determined the scale of the tracks.
I got it to fit by increasing the morph parameters for my track gauge morph to -250 / 250%, (set to about 230% I think)not too much distortion, but the rails are still too small for the wheels of the PS car.
Below are some images so you can decide for you self. from a far its looks ok, but close up it will look a bit odd.
Also because my prop is a duel track, if you narrow the tracks, they narrow inwards, so even if you scale it for the Parkside car, they would clip each other if placed 2 side by side (on each track) So just a heads up.
The PSP car really doesn't fit the old Stations platforms well either, even if you fiddle with the morph and scale of both. If you were planning to buy the old station especially for the PSP car, my advice (as much as I want sales) would be - don't.
The 2 styles don't mix too well anyway. How did a Rusty Vintage American trailer end up on an English rural railway ? Oh wait, arguments like that don't really work when it comes to art does it? Damn it. :P
Greetings,
So cool; thank you! In researching it, when you mentioned it, I realized there were a bunch of standards. I'll have to bust out Measure Metrics and see how wide the various tracks are, and how they compare to 4'8.5"! :)
You had me at 'gauge morph' though, once it got through my thick head what that was. :)
[edit:] Actually, the Old Station looks a lot like the train station I spent a lot of time at in my youth on Long Island, NY. If I do use them together I'll just make sure to render from an angle that doesn't show the wheels.

Whoops, well mine (Gauge) wasn't really done to an exact real-world scale, So its probably a touch wider than the real mcCoy.
Sorry about that.
Dogz, I can't believe you modelled these without referencing real-world measurements. The Thumper (trainspotters in the early 1970s round our way used to call them "Bogs" - don't ask!) looks spot on to me. Anyway, I've arranged a meeting with my Bank Manager for this afternoon, and I'll see what he has to say.
Oh no Not the.... the bank manager! (Especially if hes from Natwest because then after hes done telling me off he will probably try to sell me a bloody Gold Account!)
Seriously 'bogs'? You realize now that I cant die in peace without knowing what that means..I'm assuming they didn't smell of flowers or something? :P
I Google d it and nothing, have the 70's trainspotters round your way not discovered the internet yet? Don't tell them - they might not leave the house ever again... like me!
Like Cayman I'm amazed you didn't make those from detailed plans - the renders take me straight back as you've really caught the look and feel. Plenty of potential for spooky renders, detective stories, Avengers style adventures and plain romance. Now we just need suitable clothes and hair for the land fashion forgot.
I used references but not blue prints, truth be told I was a train nut when i was a kid, until i migrated to aviation nerd-ism, - before discovering Alcohol, cigarettes and girls etc.
Now of course I'm older and going trough the nostalgia phase. But somehow these things have stuck quite well in my memory over all these years.
Ahh yes the Avengers!, Need a Steed outfit for Gen2M, I think Sickle has something in that department,....Now I want to make a face morph of Diana Rigg but I've got too much to do :(..
Anyway - thanks Richard.
I did try to make night time render for the promos, but me and lighting don't get on very well, this is as far as I got with it. before realizing it was taking up far too much time to get it right.
The whole set looks really great, love the night render too! It adds up to quite an expensive set though if you get the railway/station/train. Any plans to do a bundle at a special price?
do what I am doing, start with the tracks and station and patiently wait on the platform for the train to arrive in your runtime later
Just started a video going along the track tunnel to tunnel in the full scene using octane
rendering well so far 15sec per frame
I did have to reduce some of the big textures though, should be done in 6 hours I hope.
The station is not unlike some of ours in South Australia actually just the surrounds a bit less lush.
Some test renders with the tracks and the old rusty train, as well as the regular train that comes with the set.
I'm quite happy with the set so far. :-)
I scaled up the rusty train by 126.2%, rather than just scaling up the wheels. G2M is added for size comparision.
quick wiz down the track now I need to save for the trains
You think you've got problems with a 3D model, they have far worse problems in the Real World (tm). To this day, Australia has 3 different rail gauges traveling across the continent. The famed British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel built the Great Western Railway using an impossibly wide 7 feet 1/4 inch gauge (2140 mm). That's the great thing about standards. There are so many to choose from!

Looks great, the Octane Rendering really makes it come alive - a shame about the artifacting on the tunnel entrance wall towards the end. Great work, Wendy!
Nope. Happy right here, thank you.

yes I noticed that and wondered if a geometry issue that I could fix with smoothing/subdiv
Nope. Happy right here, thank you.

better than the wiz off the platform by an intoxicated gent I was thinking it may have been read as
I got all three items and can't wait to play with it. Looks like fun! (Not to mention the double punches.)

.. not such a good idea if they've electrified the line ;-)

Yes that was weird, It doesn't show up in 3d delight, or the standard renderer in 3ds max. so I have no idea....
Also noticed the tiling on the station buildings brick texture was shot.
Played with this as I'm somewhat a train nerd.
If every train was modelled after the European standard of 1435mm track width we would be all happy campers.
Dogz railroad seems to be 1850mm trackwidth.
Jacks Parkside seems to be 1450mm trackwidth.
Antfarms borderline seems to be around 1460mm trackwidth.
All measured with Measure Metric
Hmm fair point, Might be possible fix this with a morph.... Ill have play with it later on.
Nice night lighting there ^
As an FYI standard track gauge is 4 foot 8.5 inches. A standard freight car wheel is 33 inches in diameter, with some intermodal spine cars having a wheel diameter of 28 inches. Hope that helps with getting proportions correct..
sleeper (tie) spacing can vary depending on whether the tie is steel, concrete or wood, but its usually between 25 and 30 inches.
Cheers

and that's why I wish I wasn't retired, so I could afford the Old Railway series... sigh..

easier than fixing real ones at least, my country a hotspotch of gauges
I just bought the Old Railway package and I'm hoping to export just the railway track, with gravel into Bryce 7. No clue how to do it. :(
