Help! Clothing without 8.0 support like Body Chains 3

Did I mention that I just hate it when new clothing/accessory products don't properly support 8.0. It is a mess. Take the new Body Chains 3 from Sshodan I just purchased. I can either pick G3F or G8.1F versions from smart content. Both trigger the Auto-Fit dialog once applied to a G8F. Some items fit OK then, some behave badly. Why is it so hard or not even a requirement from DAZ, that Gen 8(.1) clothing is properly working both on 8.0 and 8.1.

Any ideas what I might need to manually change so that things work properly?

I don't understand why 8.1 clothing wouldn't work seamlessly on 8.0, given that the geometry and rigging are identical. Have you tried the Scene Identification trick?

Nope. Could you help me on that one?

Select the item(s) in question in the scene pane, then click on the hamburger icon, go to Edit -> Scene Identification and change Preferred Base to Genesis 8 (male/female).

Thank you for this. Is generally working. Things are still not optimal though. Bought Urban Warrior Outfit for example. Title said it is for 8.0 and 8.1. But once applied to 8.1 it triggers auto-fit. Now with Scene Identification I can change to 8.0 but as it is a 7-piece-outfit I have to do this seven times and then parent the items to the figure. Once done the h.materials do no longer work, maybe as those expect a 8.1 figure as well. And that is just a random example. Cannot understand why DAZ was not able to provide a better solution.

  • No, you should be able to select multiple and do Scene Identification all at once (not just one at a time)... just select multiple items before going to Scene Identification.

It can still be a pain, though. The hierarchical materials are one of those pain points.

  • Thank you for answering my question before I even asked it. I was curious about the "G8.1F but not G8F" for Body Chains 3. That has made it a lot less attractive to me given I have 2-3 G8.1F's and tons of G8F's. sad

Aw phooey, I instabought this, didn't realize it was for G3 and G8.1. That's a bummer.

Scene identification is technically a workaround but you shouldn't have to. There's nothing different about the rigging between those two figures (short of the facial rig, which doesn't matter here)...so why would the creator exclude G8?

The creator can set Preferred Base when saving the asset in the first place. I looked in the one Genesis 8.1 Male outfit I do have, and Preferred Base is set to "Genesis 8/Male" in the data file (.dsf) for each item. Loads on Genesis 8 without blinking. So, not so much a workaround as filling in what should have been.

Technically, Studio should be able to natively interchange clothing assets between G8 and G8.1 without problem. Why no fix to accomplish this was implemented is completely beyond me, even a quick and dirty fix would be permissable until a more elegant solution is concocted. (like, ALWAYS saving G8.1 clothing assets as G8, or having an exception for G8 and G8.1 to accept clothing assets of both G8 and G8.1 as if they were the same thing, since, for clothing items, they technically are, except for this single one little property called "version number")
