Whats the deal with the Gallery?

Are they like completely reconstructiing the Gallery from the ground up, or what? I follow the updates on the Blog https://blog.daz3d.com/scheduled-maintenance-for-daz3d-com/

But its been weeks. Surley what ever they are doing cant be that complex... Or am I wrong. What exactly ARE they doing with the Gallery to have it down for so long?

Sad cause for me, thats the part where I got started. Where I grew into the artist I am now. I love posting images I make and having people comment and like them. It plays a big part in my enthusiasm. I feel disconnected from my community.

What does "they're checking shoulders" mean?  Is that an actual explanation or some sort of joke?

It's a fairly recent development that any female figure that looks remotely like a juvenille needs to have their shoulders covered (no spaghetti straps or sleeveless tops and dresses). Cause it's alluring - I guess. I'm still trying to figure that one out. I've never looked at a shoulder as a sexy part of the body, but hey...different strokes.

OK. But what does it have to do with the new gallery?

Shouldn't they have been checking images for these concerns on the previous gallery anyway?

  • I doubt that has anything to do with it. This effects everyone. Not just me. Or anyone else.

I grew up never hearing of it until I went to a Lutheran secondary school and innocently wore a halter top casual clothing day.

    My mother actually sewed it.

I was totally surprised by by the reaction and having to wear my cardigan, I never grew up with such prudish values and wore strappy dresses all the time outside of school, even boob tubes, I did go to church but our local one was far more relaxed, people wore jeans etc unheard of among the sorts at that private school!

It was like going back 20 years to the 50's, I was used to pantsuits and we had to wear dresses and stockings as the uniform FFS.

So I'm gathering that no one really knows the real reason the gallery is not working.

My guess would be that because of the fact they made a major overhaul to the "guts" of the entire DAZ3D platform, it also affects the galleries, and that is probably the last thing on their list to fix, due to all the issues they have had to address with the new store and so forth. They have also made a number of new software releases, including filament plugins, Octane integration, and a new version of DAZ Studio. In other words, they have been busier than Santa's Workshop. cool

    But I'm only guessing.

Considering a lot of the iffy stuff in the store, Daz isn't all that prudish.  They just need to be extra careful not to bump up against any boundaries set up by their payment processors, etc.  P*rnhub just lost their ability to accept major credit cards a few days ago over an article in the New York Times concerning videos and images of child abuse, and they're a MUCH bigger company than Daz.  They ditched about 75% of their content in response.

The shoulders thing may seem silly, but Daz needs to prioritize staying in business.  They have employees, investors, and let's not forget the PAs who depend on being able to sell on Daz for their livelihoods.  I don't blame them one bit.

    Still kind of funny, though.

Oh, it was simple.  They just removed anything uploaded by non-verified users.

  • wait ... you need to figure out what to pull blush

They did say it would be weeks before galleries are back.

As a practical issue, given that the gallery and store and forum were all somewhat interconnected -- through the user database if nothing else -- and given that they rebuilt the backend of the store and clearly had to rebuild something related to the forum (although not the forum itself, exactly), they may need to rebuild the backend of the gallery as well. (And hopefully, also the front end in a way that allows threaded comments. But we shall see. Someday.)

  • It could also be that Daz is now keeping an eye out for what is allowed in other parts of the world. Many conservative countries have areas where shoulders must be covered. It's definately true in parts of India, that shoulders should be covered. a recent travel guide notes :

'If you’re visiting mostly Muslim or Hindu countries, it’s respectful to cover your shoulders. This can be difficult in warmer climates, but leave the singlets and spaghetti straps at home, unless they are used for sleeping or layering. If nothing else, have at least one light shirt that covers your shoulders for days you’re visiting temples and holy sites'

Nah, I remember in school, gals could not were spaghetti strap blouses, strapless blouses, tube tops, halter tops, skirts above the knees, shear clothing, clothing with objectional print or pattern printed on them, makeup and perfume usage was restricted.

    Guys had restrictions too.

And no need to guess, yes, guys were sent home way more often or suspended over the clothing they wore or their hair then gals wore.

Every business I've ever worked for has dress codes too.

To me all that seems sort of weird and unneccessary to tell us but apparently as soon as they don't; folk start taking advantage of it.

  • Since this thread has taken some unhelpful detours, and sicne the question has - as far as possible - been answered, the thread is being locked.

Even though Richard was correct in locking this thread because it had gone so far off the rails it had become a seafaring vessel, I'll still pop in and add a little gallery update.

We thought before the store transition that the gallery was like the forums, because it sat on it's own server running a webserver and a database server and all that sort of stuff we just thought we would proxy the requests through like we do the forums. Instead it turns out the gallery was built like some form of the code equivalent of vogon poetry. Parts of it were embedded in the store, other parts were running on it's own server and entangled through a bunch of undocumented endpoints and API calls.

So, instead we are rebuilding the galleries and should be making it look and feel a lot nicer, but also adding some small but very helpful functionality to spruce up the galleries. The old images and comments should be imported automatically, so no worries on the old data either. I don't have a firm commitment on the date when we are releasing it but it should out soon after the holidays are over.
