Hi,

I discovered a lot of good stuff was deleted from internet, it's very sad to know that I missed the opportunity to purchase them (For example Cosmonaut by Uzilite).

Why to remove these products forever ? I mean the content could be available as Freebies/Unsupported content (Store Archives).

What is the policy of Daz about it ?

  • That is a nice outfit and I've always loved Uzilite's scifi outfits, especially boots. It is a shame.

Spending a lot of time and energy and finally putting this work in a trashbin when some people would be happy to use it.

Too often, that's the nature of digital work. It gets thrown out or lost over time. Sometimes, whoever made it decides to pull it. Store stops selling it. Unfortunate!

Not speaking for Daz, but from what I've seen, items they pull from their store revert to creator. For example, Wowie made Aweshader available as a freebie. Dartanbeck has done that with his Carrara products, too.

Unless it was a Daz Original it would have been the PA's decision. They may have many reasons for removing old content and not wishing it to be available any more.

  • Uzilite was selling content in gumroad, last I checked. He or she had a Genesis 8 Male suite I was eyeing, but when I went to get it, I found out it was no longer available. Now there's only a G8F freebie on his/her gumroad store :(.

The OP's outfit was never sold at Daz3d. Uzilite always sold that on Gumroad, so Daz3d would have no "policy" regarding it. You can always try to reach out to Uzilite on Facebook and see if they might consider selling you a copy.

Uzilite seemed to be sick and the activity stops in 2019 .

I also tried to contact Anat Dayag ( A_ ) for the RuntimeDNA content but the activity stops in 2019.

About Daz, the shop still sells products requiring Vittorio 4.2 or Guy 4 M4 (by Pdxjims ), so it's strange to do not provide these products.

Daz is not an owner of this product, how it can be available as freebie? Daz sold it for 50% royalty. As I know, Renderosity removes products if they are not sold for 6 months. May be Daz has the same rules.

So, buy it if you want it - don't wait for years.

I know Daz Studio for 3 years only, nobody told me this content was available.

I found Cosmonaut by accident yesterday when I was looking for Ryder armor (Mass Effect) in Google Image.

I guess more than 1000 products were deleted from daz store for the last 3 months. This process is permanent. So, if you want to buy something old - do it now :)

There are a few nice things for Daz on Gumroad of which uzilite was one, but nothing now but that freebie. Too bad. :( I have the cosmonaut suit and it's very nice.

This is another problem, Daz and the other shops (forum ToS) do not allow the customers to share this content.

I understand why they do that but it doesn't help me.

I don't think Rendo do that anymore.

Scorpio is right. Rendo stopped removing products that way. They can still land in clearance, but some vendors actually use that as a discount mechanism.

This or other way, but old content will gone away one day. Nothing is permanent under the Moon. Unfortunately, product's authors are not lives forever too.

The products are not completely wiped out, the customers who own these products can download them.

All the files are still hosted by the shops.

I know that. Nobody can buy it anymore and product's page with description and preview images gone away. So, it still alive?

Gumroad and Renderosity hide the pages in the catalog but we can still visit them.

I suspect that it is the influence of stores like Amazon that have created this expectation of an always on demand world.  This is an explanation of why certain artists don't simply give away their work or have people go through their first drafts: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/11/t-magazine/artists-destroy-past-work.html

I didn't read the article: there are too many english words for me :) But my version is that artists get frustrated with low sales, especially when product appears on pirate site in next few days after it was published.

In short, the articles say artists drop their work because:

    1. they are unhappy with the image that it projects of their work quality
    2. it doesn't represent what they currently do so they want to rebrand

I think,  in the 3d world, it is a bit more complicated.

    1. The artist might cull a work because they hope to return to it and refurbish it
    2. The artist may leave the 3d community and don't want to deal wth the support that you have to give even a freebie
    3. The work represents a business failure that may not want to be revisited
    4. And there may be tax considerations where you can't consider it a financial loss if you ultimately give away thus taking away its status as a commercial product.

Your question is a good one....  It is a never ending tug of war between us consumers who view an artist's output as a consumable and the artists who think of it both as an artistic expression and inventory.  We should all keep in mind that it is a business so the idea of a freebie is not a given.  I would encourage everyone to buy the product if you like a given artist and want them to survive.  We have been endless threads about why there isn't more of x and y when it boils down to customers actually buying z when they ask for x and y.  There is also a good discussion to be had about intellectual property i.e. if they don't want to sell it, why don't they give it away?  The answer is probably the same reason that the printing press fueled the Renaissance; it wasn't the printing press alone.... simultaneously, the concept that an author could own creative output and could defend it in court made books, fiction and non fiction, into a business.  Getting back to the original topic, I do recall a pair of creators who had a falling out so they dissolved the business, pulled the products, and would have never agreed to do anything with the products since seeing it would just remind them of bad times so... the product disappears.

nemesis10, #3 is exactly what I said. Low sales, especially for new products, means low income, that means waste of time for artists and they stop selling even good products. Imaging that you spent a month to create a product and earn only $500 for it. Finita la comedia. Nothing sublime exalted - just a business. And I understand artists if they don't distribute their products for free after this.

  • even freebie makers catch a lot of flack from choosey beggars about their work broken heart

I do find it annoying when it was not the creator's choice though as has been the case with some product removals at DAZ.

Some have since placed their stuff elsewhere for free in the case of some Carrara PA's others are lost forever even the PA no longer having a copy crying

I always feel sad when an artist removes or destroys an old work because they feel it no longer represents their current direction or quality standards. It's as if they underestimate themselves as an artist. Art isn't a singular statement, it's an ever evolving path of progress. Old work shows how an artist grew and developed, and became whatever he or she becomes. We couldn't even remotely understand how the human race became what it is today by ignoring periods like the Greek and Roman empires, the times of colonization and slavery, the French Revolution, the First and Second World Wars, etcetera. The same applies to art. We need history to really appreciate it. Ignoring history makes it nothing more than a "nice piece".

I have a couple of Uzilite's products from the DAZ 3D Store and plan to possible buy more should they even go on sale for a price them tempts me more that whatever else is on sale at that moment in time. I also had planned to buy some products from their Gumroad store but the PA wasn't very active with either of new products to remind us or sales discounts to remind us.

The price of his products are about the same or even more than what I pay at WalMart for a full set of clothes that I wear in the real world to put things in perspective of what's being asked in that regards to paying full price.

    His products are nice though.
