Reinstall drivers as windows sometimes replace them from windows update. Unistall them from device manager, restart computer and check then
You can also use the Device Manager to roll back the affected devices to prior drivers.
First make sure what your audio output device is and it is what you want it to be. For reasons I've never really udnerstood sometimes when you do an update that can get shifted around, I periodically have it get set to be the "speakers" of my monitor which doesn't have speakers. So it could be something like that.
Next you could need to update your audio driver. If your computer is a rpebuilt go to the makers website and search for the model and how to update audio driver. You should get to it eventually. If you built it yourself or know the maker and model of the motherboard just go to the manufacturer's website and find the support page for the motherboard and there should be a driver link there.
Hopefully one of those fixes the issue.
that 2004 windows update is just awful

I wish I knew what was changed so I could fix it, file explorer seems to be the worst culprit
There was a new setting added (I think) in Windows Security -> App and Browser Control -> Reputation-based protection called "Potentially unwanted app blocking". I was warned one of the two parts (Block Apps, Block Downloads) was not enabled after the update. I did notice that download "Save As..." dialogs take a lot longer to start up. Or I could just be testy.
At least having Clipboard history "On" makes W10 laggy when actually trying to get something done (Settings\System\Clipboard)

yes I have a win7 rig as well and it's so zippy in comparison
have also thought it could be indexing which I actually have disabled on the Win7
When I finally gave up and let the IT bring me W10 at work, I had quite a list of changes for them to make before even bringing it to me, disabling Indexing was amongst those changes. IT really "loves" me

A feature that speeds up searching for files on your drives. It is a favorite bugaboo of people who are baselessly afraid of Win10. It has nothing to do with your problem.
Happened to me too (Windows 10 Professional in German). Updating the driver for the soundcard worked.
well I was OK with Windows 10 until the big 2004 update
my issues were different IE lagginess so might help me
my sound is from my monitor speakers using the Nvidia driver so no idea if onboard sound affected
A feature that doesn't speed up searching, but slows it down and sometimes doesn't even find the file that's standing right in front of it (tested) - A feature that was outdated the day it was introduced to fix problems MS created around the turn of the century.
