Installing from scratch hurts my hard drive?

I've spent the past few weeks installing most of my DAZ content from scratch. My file manager has totally collapsed numerous times. I'm glad the job is almost done. I will copy the results to a new hard drive I bought this week.

Collapsed how?
Sometimes the file manager window just disappears. Other times the computer screen goes totally black, and then the windows disappear.
I assume you are referring to windows file explorer?
I made the mistake of resetting windows without backing up my smart content database and that DB got lost during the rest, so I started reinstalling everything over again (on top of what was there...probably was a better way, but it seemed reasonable at the time.) Sadly, that disk had a bad sector and caused all sorts of trouble, often causing hard crashes while I was sleeping (I usually kicked off large sets right before going to bed)
So, if you are experiencing a lot of wonky behavior, you may want to run the low level disk scan.
FWIW, my problems kept on even after I quit using that disk because the resets had caused some issues with another disk. Those were repairable, but everytime my backup software tried to access files that were incorrectly "linked" due to those errors, things started going crazy. It was only after I removed the problem disk and scanned the other that my problems were resolved.
Win 7 or 10?
I'm using Windows 10 on my 17" Hewlett Packard notebook. Perhaps this problem is caused by the fact that I use "!!!!" in my folder names? I think I read somewhere that those "!" marks confuse Windows file manager? I'm eliminating all the "!" and also simplifying my file paths. I'm breaking down the originals and installed files to categories such as "Gen2 Females, Gen2 Males," etc.
I do something similar with content I purchase outside the DAZ store and I do use bang (!) followed by a number of spaces to help organize the top level categories and that doesn't seem to ever have affected my windows system (but, I switched from Mac to Windows 10 a year ago, so that may have been a problem at some earlier version, I guess).
Honestly, I would run the scan utility (Error checking from this page should do it: https://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-scan-and-clean-your-drive-in-windows-10-973995/ ) It could also be memory. Do you have much RAM? I have noticed that windows explorer can rack up lots of RAM in the Task Manager process listing if I don't close stuff down that have a lot of files in them. Especially if they are set to show thumbnails. I also was experiencing regular Windows explorer problems with my computer before I reset windows (periodically, the desktop would blink and then all explorer windows would disappear being replaced with whatever explorer folders it brought up when I booted up last). I imagine something got corrupted and periodically made things go crazy every so often.
Sorry I took so long to respond. My life is very chaotic right now. I'm using a Hewlett Packard 17'" notebook. It has anm i5 1.65 ghz CPU & 12GB of RAM. I got it mainly because I wanted a larger screen for doing my genealogy (family tree) work. Now I'm just biding time till I can buy a much better desktop PC. I'm in the process of moving all my files over to a new external usb drive. We'll see if that makes a difference.
