Smoking Props

I was just wondering in the smoke plane and cherry on the cigarette  in the the new smoking props product are animatable. The promo shows the smoke being animated but I cannot see how to key frame the randomizer script.

It seems odd to have a randomizing script for the smoke if the sole intention is for still shots. I'm dying for the vendors to finally start supporting animator's needs in DAZ.

render them out as a mp4 in Hitfilm and use it as a texture in iClone enlightened

I don't tthink the randomizer is meant to animate the smoke. It sets a random opacity and mask out of the available choices for each of the 5 planes. The masks are not sequential images, so animating it would look odd. The smoke would jump from one shape to another, not like a smooth rising smoke plume that fritters away after a foot or two.

How do you think they did the animated effects in the promo video? It is so misleading

  • NorthOf45NorthOf45 Posts: 5,694

    Promo video? Where?

  • kwanniekwannie Posts: 870

North, sorry it was linked within the DAZ forum maybe
I can't call it a Promo video, my apology. Whatever the source it is stll misleading since the product was offered with the bundle in that video.

That looks like something else entirely. What can I say? Marketing...

The only way I've gotten smoke to work in Daz was with like Kindred Arts' Fireworx, but it's not really made for it and it gives good results but you can tell it's not an animation setup, you just have to keyframe the scale and rotation a lot. Or just get action essentails and comp it in in After effects, or get Blender 2.82 and use Mantaflow as it is amazing.

LOL, Yep North sly and conteptuous demons, they are!!

Oh hey!! Bennie always like you two cent. Well clouds by philosopher is amazing but you can't get the clousd to shape up like smoke trails. There used to be a produt on content paradise for poser, and way back there was a product called weird juice for poser that could do firey smoke trails. I wonder if these planes would work with Mcasual's smoke script.

I was thinking, if one could start with a donut like tube and morph it so it turns in on itself one could trail a smoke texture through it

  • kwanniekwannie Posts: 870

Mcasual did something like that for a water effect. The problem would be the shape of the smoke trail. A torus would just give you a column type shape.

google for a smoke footage and blend it with a video editor

    really easy to do

  • kwanniekwannie Posts: 870

Thank you  Ruphuss, but I  have absolutely no idea what you mean by blend it with a video editor. I got the look for smoke footage part but blend it to what? A plane in DAZ  or something else?

  • RuphussRuphuss Posts: 2,631

you put your render into a video editor

    i am using vegas pro

    one channel for the render

    one channel for the footage

the footage must have an alpha channel to be  transparent or you use chromakey effect (greenscreen)

Here's a Photoshop tutorial on how to blend smoke footage on a 2D picture:

I've been meaning to try this myself!

Ahhhhh, that is indeed cool but I don't have any high the end tools required. I'm limited to open source right now.

Well, it isn't open source or free but I'm pretty sure I saw a tutorial on doing that with Affinity Photo - it's usually worth checking the video, at least until they use some patented "Do magic" tool that no other application has for most of the heavy liffting, as most of the basic tools are available in all applications (and sometimes making the translation can be more educational than just following the steps in a walk-through).

I been hearing a lot about Affinity Pro so I might just have to give it a whirl. Hitfilm requires registration even for free version, maybe somebody could help me dispell my fears about giving out email, phone number, home adress and on and on. The only reason they offer "free" stuff is to get you to register and agree to let them have the right to sell your personl information and track you all about. Yes, I know paranoia!
