Content SSD recommendations? Same SSD as OS or dedicated?

Hi all,

Does anyone store their DAZ content on an SSD? If so, what do you use and do you recommend it? What sort of speedup have you seen in DS/rendering? Do you have your content on the same SSD as your OS (assuming you have your OS on an SSD)? I'm looking at getting a Firecuda 520 to hold my DAZ content, audio/video plugins, etc. and either using it for my OS as well, or putting it inside a USB enclosure to make my library portable between my tower and laptop.

Thanks for any input.

It's unlikely anyone with more than a very small asset library has their stuff on an SSD.

If you do store your stuff that way, it is immaterial where it is. On the OS drive or not doesn't matter.

It doesn't make a difference with rendering, but it makes a difference in your loading times.  Once you have a lot of morphs/characters loading times go up noticeably, but at that point, you'll have taken up a lot of disk space.

You'd want a 2 Tb SSD for content, and then a larger HD for renders, etc.  Renders can take up a lot of disk space as well, so you'll want to take that into account as well.  Rendering to 32-bit EXR canvasses can easily get up to 150-200 Mb per image.  I usually put my applications on my primary SSD with the OS.  I don't usually keep much data there.  As far as which SSD, I guess just get one from a reliable brand/vendor?  Read some reviews?  That's what I do.

Would probably make DIM update a lot faster, if you have a lot of products.

I'll state the bleeding obious before someone else does.... whereever you put your content, make sure you have a second copy stored somewhere else... done.

I have not only all my DAZ content on my system disk which is a 2TB SSD but also the DIM installers and my Unity Asset Store content are on that same 2TB SSD and I still have 800GB free SSD space. It's great! I do plan on adding a 2nd 2TB SSD later to move my DAZ Content and Windows 10 'Library' folders too but with 800GB still free it's not urgent especially as much as my DAZ 3D content purchases have slowed down (I have almost 5000 DAZ 3D products now in DIM).

My 2TB SSD is a run of the mill 2TB Sata iii 6GB/s SSD by Sandisk that I bought as a return from Amazon for $168, you should be able to get a new one, non-returned for about $200. I run Windows 7 full backup with image weekly on my Windows 10 machine to a 2 year old 2TB Seagate Firecuda hybrid SSHD on Sunday mornings with no problem. It runs during sleep hours. Eventually I'll replace with 2TB sata iii SSD too.
