Matte Fog - Who is he and what is he doing in my Render Settings?

So yeah, Matte Fog showed up in my public build render settings.  Who is he and why would I want him in my renders?  I've tried googling him, but he's not on Facebook, Twitter or Tinder.  Does anyone know this guy?

    I am sure he has ghosted a few

    being a vapor and all devil

    I recall something mentioned in the beta thread and to see the changelog but it just went over my head blush

    Right, I saw them say stuff, but they never said what he's good for.  I have models to almost dress and render.  I'd like to know what the point of him is before I spend time trying to get on his good side. 

    It's like here's Matte Fog.  #YOLO

    The Matte Fog adds a fog layer to any render. It can be adjusted using the sliders. The one set as metres adjust the depth into the render that it takes affect. The other one adjust the brightness and how see through its. I think, I played around with it a few days ago but I can't look at the moment as I am rendering something.
