solved edit: If you need to light viewport scene in a way taht doesn't affect rendering, press CTRL L to turn on a viewport only scene light, then CTRL L again to toggle it off.

here is more info on preview light (CTRL L):

http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/interface/inline/window/dzpreviewlightsaction

When you add lights to a scene, they may not appear to have any effect unless you turn this mode on. When Use Scene Lights is off, only a default single light (called a “headlight”) is used to light your scene. When this mode is on, the headlight is turned off and only the lights in the scene are used to light the scene.

How can I see an enclosed scene in the viewport when using scene lights? It's totally dark.

I have an enclosed scene: ceiling, walls and floor. There is one point light inside.

The problem is that the viewport is totally dark and I can't see anything.

Currently, I have to enable the headlamp when working, then turn it off before a render.  This is unacceptable, because I have to do it every time.  I enable IRAY preview, I don't like how the light is positioned, so then I have to enable the headlamp, reposition my point light, disable headlamp, preview IRAY render, repeat. This is extremely tedious.

I need a light that allows me to see the scene, but not affect rendering (either IRAY preview or final render).

I need this solved once and for all. Please help.

headlamp on a camera set to auto

headlamp on a camera set to auto

Wrong. Setting it to auto ensures the headlamp stays off since there's a point light in the scene. The point light doesn't light anything in the viewport, only in a render, hence the problem, I can't see anything in the viewport. I have to manually set the headlamp to on, then turn it off before every IRAY preview render, which is driving me nuts.

did Ctrl + L not work?

If you're using Iray, there's also a render setting that lets you set auto headlamp to never. That has been the setting I use.

Hey, this is VERY handy.  What does it do exactly? Is it turning on a light that only lights the viewport? I selected my camera and noticed hitting CTRL L does not change it's settings, or does it?

Does this CTRL L light affect rendering, whether IRAY preview or final render?

By default DS previews the lights in the scene, which may not be helpful. The Preview of lights can be turned off via Window>Preview Lights or by, by default, cmd/ctrl L. There's no need to turn the preview back on wjhen you render - it affects the preview only (hence the name of the command).

I feel bad for anyone who doesn't know about this option.

I've been working with DAZ for five months, and although I just started workign with scene lights (since I was mainly using HDRI before), I had no idea about CTRL L. It seems like a vital, must know, feature.

@Flortale "I've been working with DAZ for five months . . . .   It seems like a vital, must know, feature.  "

The question gets answered about everyother month (sometimes seems like every other week).

You've been asking questions a lot longer than that.

When I did a search nothing came up in regards to this issue. It's important a problem be stated in more than one way, so it's indexed by search engines.   Now if someone researches my same issue, they'll find my post.

Yes, beyond the five month scope I was using Poser as my primary 3d software.  I would ask qusetions about DAZ becuase I knew one day it would be superior to Poser.
