My Daz Studio Is Simply Broken

SeiginotoraSeiginotora Posts: 114

Ever since I transferred everything into the new iMac, my Daz3D has been off kilter. For one, I keep getting the PostgreSQL CMS error. No matter what I do to try to direct Daz3D to the folder where it's at, it never EVER applies it. It just reverts back. I can't search in the content library because if I type ANYTHING in the search engine the app automatically crashes. I can't animate anything in Daz3D, and my pwEffect/Catch/Ghost shaders aren't working; some characters I created require said apps to actually look right. This bit might actually be fixable; for example, I noticed in the History that it can't find "pwEffectDisplace," so it just goes to "null" instead. I found "pwEffectDisplace.sdl" and it's where it should be, so where does Daz3D expect it to be in.

Other than these glitches Daz3D can still render just fine. For the record I primarily render in 3Delight, though one of the reasons I got a new compy was so that I could be able to render in Iray, too. I want to mix and match both render engines depending on what I want, as well as improve my animation skills. But with Daz3D as buggy as it is right now, I can't do any of that.

Can anyone help me to get Daz3D back up and running to its maximum potential? For the record I'm using both the standard and the public build; another thing wrong with it is that I can't manually select textures in the standard version, which is why I downloaded the public build as it can do that just fine.

Though I'm wondering if having two different Daz3Ds is causing all of these issues to begin with. :/

    Presumably you mean Daz Studio.

The PostgreSQL issue is msot likely to eb down to permissins on the folder - especially if you copied the old application support folder(s) across from your previous system. The other issues are probably contnt diectory settings - do you use the defaults? Exactly where are the files that DS isn't finding (full path)? How did you install the content, or did you copy the content from the old machine?

I did a full transfer from the old iMac. I should note that before I did that I was having the animation issues before hand. I thought it was because the iMac was old (it was late 2013) but I'm still having issues with it.

More often than not when I install content I do it manually, that way it's easier for me to find it. But if Daz Studio has defaulted and is simply confused (for lack of a better term) and unable to find things, how do I switch things back proper?

You need to go to Daz Studio>Preferences, then in the Content tab click the Content Directory Manager button and check that the folders listed un the Current set are correct (that is, they are the parent folders for the Data and Runtiem folders in your content directories). That won't, however, solve the PostgreSQL issue. If PostgreSQL is actually installed you will need to go to the folder listed in Daz Studio>Preferences>CMS Settings and check its permissions.

Okay, so the first attachment is what I got going in my content directory now. As far as I can tell it seems okay, but again, can't search for anything in the content search engine or else the whole app crashes. The CMS settings are stuck where they are and I do have CMS folders. But it doesn't matter which one I direct Daz Studio to because after I hit Apply and and Accept, it just reverts back to "None" and "1024." And I have no idea how to fix it.

OK, so it is failing to write its configuration file. I'm not sure where that lives on the Mac, and although I suspect it's a permissions issue we have just had someone on Windows with a similar problem who didn't have obvious permission issues.

I've been helping someone with another CMS / Mac  problem that is stumping me, so maybe this is of the same kind.

What happens there is when the CMS is installed from DIM, DIM creates a directory in ~/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/cms that is called ContentCluster, which is corrent. But, when DS is launched, t seems to remove that directory and the cmscfg.json file instead of pointing out the content cluster and port points to the postgres directory in /Applications.

So, ic you check in the difecrtory mentioned above, do you have a ContentCluster directory in there? ~/Library for your information is the Library inside your home directory. Depending on version of OSX, it can either be found from the Finder Go menu or you need to "go there manually from the finder menu as it's a hidden directory.

    Start off there..

Yep, I got it there. Library > Application Support > DAZ 3D > cms > ContentCluster.

Another issue I'm dealing with is that Daz Studio isn't rendering animations. I try rendering something, but when it's complete I get this error message. I don't know if it's related to the PostgreSQL CMS situation.

Another problem I'm experiencing is the pw Shaders are broken too. I've posted an example; here's one of my characters as she's supposed to look with the shaders working; I'm using pwEfffect's Phantom shader to create a holographic skin effect for her. But with the shaders broken all I get is this non-glowy green opaque skin that ruins her look.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you are rendering in 3Delight? All of the pw sahders are for 3Delight rather than Iray.

Have you taken the error message's suggestion and tried another location? Though in general it is better to render to an image sequence rather than direct to .mov - more flexibility, the images (if PNG ot Tiff) will have an alpha, you can recover from a crash...

That coudl well be another issue with permissions, so it may well be related to the underlying cause of the PostgreSQL issue.

I am indeed rendering in 3Delight. I'm not using Iray when I'm using the shaders. I've tried moving the files in question to different Shader folders, but I still get the same results.

I don't know exactly what folders to give permissions to; I just tried to open up permissions to the "cms" folder but that did absolutely nothing. I'm almost tempted to maybe just scrap everything (save for the Runtime of course) and just redownload the whole app all over again. But even that might not work.

I just sent a ticket to the Daz3D Help Support, I'm so desperate to get all this fixed.
