Big City High School

Hi   This is Franklin Lane high School in Queens (now closed),

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_K._Lane_High_School

I attended this school a long time ago.

The building  has a distinctive big-city high school appearance and has been featured in Spiderman movies and others.

Has anyone seen a similar 3-d model or would anyone be interested in creating a model?

Thanks

I attended smaller but very similar ones in multiple states all over the US. It's a shame they closed about all of them down. They were quite nice but maybe not hurricane and tornado proof enough maybe?

There is no school anything like that in the DAZ store. There is 'School's Out' but it's more typical style of a school built in the 60s or 1st half of the 70s.

    Maybe at Renderosity?

That's a fairly retro building design, so you'll probably have to find something that's similar and kit bash it a bit.  Vanishing Point's American High School for DAZ at Renderosity is similar but a bit more modern and lacks the distinctive steeple.  However, I think you might get something closer to your photo if you took the YMCA building from Dreamland Model's Movie Sets, CIty Blocks 12, (also at Rendo) duplicated it  and put two or three copies together to form a single larger building.

Suggestion: Not really the same but maybe use a building such as the courthouse in Mountain Valley, extend the sides with another building, and add a a tower such as Divinty Skies Prohecy

..yeah would like a few more "retro" buildings. for schools. (both primary and secondary)  like these:

    68th Street School Milwaukee.

    Bay View High, Milwaukee.

Definitely a classic structure.  Don't know of anyting off hand.  I do a lot of set work & will keep "an eye" open.

You looking for just exterior or you hoping for interior as well? That would require blueprints & the like of course.

I'd like to see something like this, too.  We have lots of classrooms, but very few school buildings.

...and the only exterior model we have is modern looking (circa 1950s or 60s).

The USA Capitol Building is somewhat similar too & cheap at Rendo but it looks like they've just use a 2D to 3D converter to create the model to my eyes. Probably no interior rooms modeled at all.

I forgot about this freebie from McCasual, however, it's more like a boarding school than a high school but it's the closest I know of.

I always think of the 'classic' (1930s+) high school as Los Angeles High School, which was featured in the early exterior shots for the 1970 TV series 'Room 222'.  Alas, the building was unrecoverably damaged in the 1971 Sylmar earthquake and demolished (exteriors were then shot at Hamilton High School and the studio-adjacent Rancho Park, which has some brick buildings).  The replacement building looks like a prison.

Oh, there are plenty of buildings that would work as a high school, but the DAZ catalog is so badly set up that it can be hard to find them.  I know that there's a replica of the Back to the Future downtown area with the courthouse that would work fine, for example, but I'll be darned if I can find it in the store at the moment.  And I'm pretty sure I own the dang thing.  Anyone got a clue on that one?

...Looks similar to the one I posted above  Wonder if it was designed by the same architect.

Here's the high school I went to:, yeah "modern architecture".

...wonder where they got the idea from..

Answering my own question - the set is call Mountain Valley https://www.daz3d.com/mountain-valley ; and it's a copy of the town square of "Hill Valley" from Back To The Future, aka the Court Square set on the Universal Studios' backlot.

This was actually my high school in Manhattan. It was bought by Jeffrey Epstein. Unbelievable that he was actually living in a former high school!

  • There do need to be more older schools, large and small.  I am a little surpised so many of them seem to be labeled purely as high schools, though.  There should be about as many elementary schools and the like in the mix, too, both interior and exterior.

As for the Epstein thing.... yeah, there were a lot of other... strange things going on around that place, too.  o0

What? Around 71st? Do you live in Manhattan? I left after high school and had no idea about any of this until I saw a photo of it after his death and went "Holy sh*t! That was my high school!"

Yes. My mother grew up in LA but moved to NYC and since I was a baby, we'd come out here to LA every year to visit my grandmother and I fell in love with the palm trees and calm compared to NYC! By the time I was 11, I decided  this is where I wanted to live when I grew up. And never looked back. (My parents ended up moving to LA too! )

Sorry for going off topic even more but I really wish I could move to CA. LA would be cool but I've always dreamed of San Diego. It's just so expensive to live in those cities so I don't think a fixed income would be enough. Beyond that, I wouldn't even know where to start for transferring Medicaid services for my caregiver and medical needs. It would be awesome not to have snow anymore though. Getting around in the snow with a wheelchair just doesn't work lol.

By the time you were 11. How precocious. A woman who knows what she wants and knows that she knows it is a rarity. Still rarer is the woman who's happy once she gets it. That is a GIFT. But, of course, you know that.

I know we're going really off topic here but California has MediCal which I guess is the same as Medicaid and Cal Fresh for food and you can even apply online. Housing is expensive though but now there's a rule that even expensive buildings have to have a few low income units but they are very hard to find. I'm talking about LA here, I'm not sure about San Diego housing but I'm pretty sure it's a lot less expensive than LA. If you're serious there are a ton of apartment apps and you can search for housing online and get an idea of pricing/location. There are non-centrally located places in San Diego that I bet are not that expensive. They even show photos of the interiors of apartments in the apps but of course it's best to see them in person because most use wide angle lenses that make them look much bigger than they actually are. You could maybe even hire a San Diego college kid for cheap to scout for you and take their own photos. The hardest part would actually be the physical move, getting all your stuff over there. I recently moved just 5 blocks away and it took me over a month to pack and move everything and I still haven't unpacked most boxes!

It's all relative.  San Diego IS expensive compared to most places, though it's on the lower end as far as Cali goes and quite reasonable compared to San Francisco.   Ultimately, it comes down to the price of land and the availability of fresh water, both of which are terrible in most of the state.  I'm originally from Sacramento and my mom's a native Angelino, but despite many offers to move back over the years, I prefer living in Houston, where I can buy a six bedroom house with a three car garage for less than than the cost of renting a two bedroom arpartment in L.A.  On the other hand, I could live even cheaper if I moved to a smaller town like Beaumont, Wichita falls or Amarillo or, move out of state to Montgomery Alabama.,Toledo, Ohio or. Ft. Wayne Indianana, but I'd miss the amenities that come from living in a major metroplex.

I don't think DAZ is too worried about me mentioning it sans link because when you see the prices you will run back to the DAZ store sweating devil
