Samdy face paint doesn't work

Is there a secret to getting the Samdy face paint materials to work?

I have tried applying the paint to the figure, and the the surface pane with the figure selected. Nothing seems to work.

    There is a Face Paint Shell wearable preset that you have to add before applying or changing the paint.
