I render most DAZ characters out of the box but I use them mainly as background characters. If you can't see details of them I don't bother with customizing them.
It puzzles me, too, because to me tinkering with combinations and kitbashing is at the soul of the hobby. But I understand people want and do different things... just... seems so foreign to me, heh.
Like, even taking two figures and just mixing them; X at 40%, Y at 60%. Woo. Maybe some youth or aging dials. 5 mins, tops.
After that, experimenting with morph packs. I often find noses too small in most figures. Thankfully, 'nose flesh size' dial fixes that in seconds. Maybe a little more fiddling with nose height, mouth width... ooo, nasolabial folds...
That's miles way from actually diving into a modeling program to make a unique face, and gives you so much freedom to achieve a unique look.
Heck, how about the shape randomizer?
..I wish we had more of a diversity, particularly in the sense of more "common folk" (instead of just fashion models/hunks) characters for G3 like G8 has. Simply can't justify the cost purchasing all the required morphs, utilities, resources, and such all over again, particularly as G8 was not as "big" a departure from G3 as G3 was from G2 (changed from TriAx to a more generic weight map system).
Picked up the G8 to G3 converter script but even with the PDF manual, having some difficulty sorting everything out.
+1
I have an incredible number of G8 pro bundles. Not all of them, as there are some I will never buy due to the content in the bundle, (stuff I really, really don't want,) but I did not purchase all of those at release. I think maybe half of those I actually paid for were picked up at big discounts long after they were released. And there are those I picked up for free, with one offer or another. There were times, as well, where I wasn't much interested in the named figure, but the cost of the bundle was less than if I just bought the 3-4 items I did want a la cart.
Truth be told, I don't need any more females. I don't really need any more males, either. Even if you don't count the generation 4 stuff I bought before I knew what I was buying, (and don't use/haven't used ever,) I have more than enough content to create nearly any scene I can envision.
And yet, I find it incredibly hard to resist female characters from Mousso, and equally hard to resist male characters from DarwinsMishap(s) and Gypsyangel.
What I really want to see in the store is an influx of male clothing that looks as good as those in the Dain 8 bundle, but with the quality and care of a PA like esha, outoftouch, or Linday!
I agree. The whole fun of DS for me is creating characters. I might do test renders of core characters for the forum but the part I like most is playing with the zillion morph packs and skins I have and making something my own. Even when I post pseudo out-of-the-box characters, I often make small tweaks and play with skin settings, expressions, eyelashes and more.
But I also agree there was a slew of female middle aged characters that came out like Jenni, Leisa, Babina and more that I can't remember the names of that added nothing to the gene pool. I don't think Nida adds anything to the gene pool that I can't do myself with all my morphs. So I only pay for character bundles with a character that adds to the gene pool or one with clothes and hair I like (or ones that come with tons of freebies.) The rest I wait till I get for free with another bundle that I do like. I usually prefer the PA addons more than the base character anyway and sometimes it's those addons that convince me to buy the base. I still haven't rendered about 80% of the base characters I own, but I do dial in small amounts to other characters on occasion. Many I have not yet used at all!
You consider Leisa and Babina "middle aged"?
If they keep doing it -its because people keep buying it,
and its probably quite a significant portion of Daz's bread and butter.
Im quite pleased to see them do such a diverse set of characters too these days, alot of different races/ages etc which is nice and more interesting to see.
-and yeah no rule you have to own them all, just what you want/need.
I keep hearing on this forum about a diverse cast of characters that the DAZ 3D store didn't have before but you needn't look that far back to see that in fact there was a diverse cast.
I think male clothing in Pro Bundles should primarily be conforming, that is, until vendors who make Daz Originals male clothing learn how to make it look as thick as peache does. I'd be happy if Luthbel would give us a Genesis 8 Urban Survivors.
If you put the same hairstyle and clothes on different women of the same general complexion, you might be fooled into thinking they look alike. But other than the resemblances between Victoria 8, Olympia 8, Ellithia 8, and maybe Penny 8, I don't see where ANY of the other Core white females ACTUALLY look alike (disregarding Thorne characters). Turn off "Hide Items I Own," and take a look. I'm ONLY talking about Core characters, not the whole Genesis 8 family.
No, now could there possibly be "too many"?
...need just one more...Cat 8.
Preferably with either displacement or strand based fur.
As a newcomer I am pretty overwhelmed by the sameness of most Daz Originals. But none of them was the reason I got into Daz3D. For pretty white female characters I am saving the money for Sangriart or buejante. However, I am interested in regular folks like Floyd 8 that few PA make. Also non-white characters have a lot of room for improvement. Asian characters in particular all feel like caricatures, and that includes Lee8 and Mr.Woo8. At least there is no shortage of quality East Asian female characters, particuarly those by Goanna.
...the base G8 characters I have are Floyd, Edie, and Stephanie I got Vicky only because I had a free offer purple banner. Other G8 characters I picked up were Xanthe (for Steph 8), Lil' Patch, AnnA HD, Awkward Age, those that came with the Edie Pro bundle (which I got for something like 18$).and Lily (made for both G3 and G8).
What is your method for doing this? I when through my GF8 library and uninstalled the characters that I didn't love.
Maybe just me, but it seems like DAZ is just desperately throwing out characters. I'm all for diversity in the core line (I have all of the core characters from... well, Victoria 1 through G3). I think it's just the sheer number of characters there are and how quickly they're being released that's kind of throwing me.
I so feel the same way, creating is what this experience with DS and 3D is all about to me. I would guess that those that posted that they just install and render would not be doing digital imagery if there wasn't a DAZ3D and they had to do it the old fashion way of actually being creative and using a modeling app and such. Makes me wonder the ratio of users that are this way since I keep seeing more forum posts along the same lines.
For me, yes for Leisa, but Babina is not there yet IMO. Even though the old (pre 94) standard was from 40-60, I consider 35-55 middle aged,
Leisa looks about 40 but not Babina. I was thinking of CJ or Ellithia I guess. They all look so similar, I get confused.
"I would guess that those that posted that they just install and render would not be doing digital imagery if there wasn't a DAZ3D and they had to do it the old fashion way of actually being creative and ..."
Awkward sentence that probably doesn't mean what it reads like.
1) maybe you meant "3D" digital imagery since 'digital imagery' was here and being done before the Daz Store..
2) Maybe you meant before asset-driven 3D content stores since Poser predated Daz and there's probably something else that predates Poser.....
3) Or the fact that digital imagery is NOT tied to anything 3D related - modeling or otherwise.....
4) Since there are 30 other ways to make the same images (and better) than a Daz Render - without ANY 3D modeling use or knowledge.
I take it for granted that you knew all of this and was just making a provocative statement. Even in your suggestion that making 3D models yourself is somehow related to being more creative.

Now that I think about it,
There has never been an area of human interest that didn't have ASSETS freely available or for sale.
Has there? I mean, what thing were you interested in doing that you need to roll your own? And THAT was the only way?
Certainly that was never true for 3D.
-------------
If anything 3D is growing to a point that many assets that only existed in 2D are now here in 3D.
If you look back to my posts from my YEAR ONE using Daz (about 3 years ago) almost ALL the products I suggested or wondered why they didn't exist now exist.
I may not have been alone, but look at the sheer number of things that didn't exist in 3D that do now.
How many challenges have been taken on by new product releases. I bet I can name a dozen.
That's a big change and level of growth.
Too many? I feel that you can never have to many figures/morphs to choose from. But I feel it's more important to have quality and uniqueness to quantity.
Within the last two month I've painstakingly transitioned from a Poser user to a DAZ studio user and I basically had to start over with no content. I have several characters from bluejaunte (Sina, Amira, Imaru, Murphy, Misumi/Misha). I don't remember when I bought Vicky8 but I have her and I just recently picked up Babina during that really nice sale because her face really caught my eye from her promo shots. I'm looking to build up my roster of figures and I'm really glad that there's a plethora of different bases to choose from. Out of the DAZ original produced bases, I'm definitely considering picking up Bridget, Mei Lin, Latonya, Charlette, Monique, Josie, Zelara, T Jane, T Raven (I'm open to suggestions though!). Obviously not all at once, only when on sale but I feel these are a good variety of ages and ethnicities to have a great diverse populated scene. I love that you can easily mix the morphs and get completely different looking figures with just a few sliders, but to me it makes it more important to have a larger pool to choose from.
Even though many feel that there's too many pretty young to medium aged white females, the single one I've been waiting for since Genesis 8 first released still didn't make her appearance.
Where's our too-hot-for-the-catwalk super-vamp Lilith 8? (with accompanying Lilith 6 and Lilith 7 for Lilith 8)
Well put it simply premade characters are for people who likes/needs premade characters, so they'll never be enough. The same as there will never be enough premade scenes or outfits.
Then if you ask me I do like to make my own characters and scenes, so I prefer character creation resources such as morphs and skins, or prop sets and terrain/plant generators rather than premade scenes. It sure takes a while to kitbash my own assets, but for me that's the fun. Also it comes out original and distinguishable from a premade asset that may be used by anyone. So kitbashing makes your works more yours.
The only time I buy a base character is to get a pro bundle as cheap as I can to get the dangly bits. Though I bought the Brute 8 just so I could use Maxx. G8M has no dangly bits yet, poor boy, prices haven't come down enough to get a pro bundle when I factor in a 60% exchange rate difference.
...having a nice gene pool to choose from helps though I often do a fair amount if "frankenmixing" using percentages of several different character shapes and heads then do the finishing work with the various morph and resource kits I have. One of the difficulties of trying to create younger custom characters is getting a smaller or more petite form that doesn't just look like a downsized adult,or in the case of younger girls, where the breast mesh doesn't distort or collapse when simply dialling the size down (which can affect how clothing fits look).
What generation?
Have you seen the petite morphs?

I actually JUST picked up another one for G3.

Maybe we need mermaid/merman 8? I wish I could get them all but not right now.
I do not see them as too many unless I want to buy them all.
Yes this!
