Why Did Views Disappear In The Forums? Only Comments Shown

An hour ago, the number of views disappeared from the forums. Only the number of comments are shown. Views help thread owners know what is popular and what isn't, what is worth pursuing. What was the rationale for taking away the views? I've done my thread for six years and want to know what the total number of views are, it was fun to see the total of the twelve threads heading to a million views / posts. (just short of 800,000) So personally, I'd like to see it fixed back to the way it was.

I thought it must have been Safari on my iPad
I have been monitoring a thread I posted in product suggestions that only had 2 views last time I could tell.
Is it just me - or do the forums seem a lot snappier now though?
It was probably removed to help speed up the forums. Makes sense, since logging views means an extra write query to the server every single time someone views a page. Under heavy load, that can slow things down even more.
yeah a lot more nippier Jack
and next we get a well working search engine for the forums....dreaming.....
now that is just wishful thinking Ruphuss
You can use google for that. (Or any other preferred search engine, I suppose.)
Views has always been a very misleading way of judging things. Take for example the fact that every Mod visits every thread every time there is a new post. Then add on the fact that if the new posts are on 2 pages, that doubles the view count as yo go to the next page. And every time you edit as post, or add something to the top post etc etc. Views is giving you a very enhanced view of how much genuine interest there is in a particular thread.
And I have just corrected a typo, so this post has counted for 2 views already, 3 even as I made another typo correcting my first one
So we know how to do a little arithmetic ... I really do like to have Views!!!! Please put them back.
Sometimes they were messed up. I have seen it not register any views when there has to have been at least one because of the number ooof replies.
edit my phone glitches and posted twice.
Since we're discussing web issues and no one, including tech support, has answered, why did they take away the ability to upload images to the forum from iOS devices? Does a mod know? It's really frustrating because I only use my iPad for forum use (and shopping.)
it's Safari, not just this forum, use Firefox
I still browse etc with Safari, I just use the Firefox app to upload images
Since it's only iOS devices my gues would be that Daz didn't take it away, but that a change in iOS has broken compatibility with the existing API.
OK thanks Wendy & Richard, I will try Firefox.
ETA tested and works! Yay!
I just tried but getting an iCloud error. Probably a WiFi-not-great issue for me instead of a Daz issue.
Turns out it is a bad WiFi issue not a phone issue or a Daz issue.
here is an example which is the shirt I got for Sunday.
Looks like the view counts are back.
Yeah, thank you!
n.b. 'cept they are not also recording? some new threads have several posts and only 1 view? fishy....
I started a thread and have posted twice to it as well as viewing several times. Still only recorded as one view but I assumed that means that it doesn't count the views of the originator.
EDIT - Nah, just checked this thread and it also has only one view and there are plenty of posts other than that of the originator.
Which balances out the posts negating the numbers based on going back and editing things, etc. There's definitely give and take. But it's a lot better than just showing the number of posts, which doesn't give a clue as to any views at all. Nothing is exact but it's better than nothing. Glad they reinstated it.
wasn't just a phone causeI use my computer but like already said views back though some maybe inaccurate some just say 1 view but have several comments
I'm not sure why they put it back like this. It doesn't seem to be counting the views, so only displays a number from the past. Of all the possibilities, this makes the least sense. Either don't display the false numbers, or keep counting as before and display the actual numbers.
Keep counting! Nice to know how many people are interested in a topic or product whether or not they be posting!
Hi everyone,
I wanted to clear this whole thing up. The views were hidden due to the fact that they haven't been working well for quite a while. All the change did was hide them since they were unreliable. We did however hear the feedback from both this thread and other venues that while they are wildly inaccurate, you still found them useful. So I removed the code that was hiding them. Nothing has changed in how they work.
That being said, we are aware of the various issues plaguing the forums. Over the next couple of months they will be receiving some much needed attention. Things like the search engine are high on my list. The issue with uploading from iOS happened after an update to iOS a while ago. The work-around that I know of is try using Chrome on those devices as it seems to work. This is also a known issue that will be resolved as we move forward.
cpage,
Good to hear, and I sincerely hope the login issue is one of the highest priorities on that list.
Thanks so much for replying! Means a lot.
One thing about the accuracy or not, CLOSED threads are only views, not people posting and going back and editing, etc. I do use the views, as it's fun to see an approximation of the CLOSED threads from six years ago to now. Example-
This shows the views on the previous 11 threads when I STARTED THREAD 12, compared to views from about a month ago. Example 85,623 is views on Thread One when I launched the 12th one, compared to the views Thread One currently has. 86,612. These are all CLOSED THREADS.
85,623 / 86,612 +989 views only on thread one, from a 2012 thread.
69,802 / 70,750
80,909 / 81,944
60,828 / 61,701
54,216 / 55,106
81,998 / 85,478
62,880 / 67,081
56,300 / 61,396
60,546 / 65,018
56,904 / 61,143
52, 652 / 56,815
722,658 / 753,044 30,386 NEW VIEWS. Can not include any posting.
I would think Daz would be interested in how much the older forum posts are still being surfed. We appreciate you hosting the forums, even if they're not perfect!
FYI, with the current thread 12 with 40,578 it's 793,622 posts/views with the understanding some are double / triple counts with edits. But again, some views aren't registering either so that may be balanced out. 11 / 12 threads are closed and contributing 30,386 views (or more, if not counting.) Headed toward 800,000!
I feel (and this is just me, I own it!) this helps motivate people to share, to keep going, to keep threads going. It helps remind us that when we post, as years go by, people are still getting help from what we have shared. Jaderail is still helping people, Wancow is helping, the list goes on.
The views also point surfers to threads where there is a lot of interaction and a place to call "home" when you want to share with thread regulars. Thanks to everyone who supports the Art Studio threads, from all of us over there. Hop on over to my / forum members thread, you're always welcome! Here's number 12.
