Best skin quality-wise for young character

Hi there,

I created a new character and I now want to add a skin to it.

I have narrowed it down to quite a few, that more or less match the colour I want (with little tweaking to translucency).

It is very hard for me to choose only one from these so if you guys could say which from these are of higher quality, so that I have few left to choose from.

My character is around 18-20 years old, if that matters (maybe some skins have details for higher age).

Babina, Bridget, Elizabeth, Gilia, JosieKimm, Myriel, Olivia, Psionne, Sharah, Victoria.

Thanks

I have some of those characters. Give me some time and I'll render them using the same face morph and light conditions. That way you can better compare which one would serve your character first.

    I think Elizabeth.

Probably Josie because of the eyebrows. Younger women usually have thicker eyebrows. Or any of them if you remove the eyebrows and use other thicker ones. Freckles can also make a character seem younger but 18-20 is not really that young...

Ok, so I rendered the ones I had from that list. A few things of note:

    • Used the same head morph & light conditions (an HDRI map) for better comparison.
    • I let them render for the exact same time.
    • Check a hi-res version here or click on the image to get there.
    • BTW, I think Bridget 8 looks the most youthful.

I plan to remove the brows for sure and use other ones whichever the skin.

Do you really believe the quality of all maps is the same?

    I think Elizabeth.

    Any particular reason?

I am also rendering them all with same lighting, different skins, it is still hard to choose just from appearance in one light. I plan to use the character in a VN so it will be under a lot of lights in the end, but I am not experienced enough to judges a skin just from one or two light sets.

    @Alex86fire,

One way to go about it, is to render other characters who will appear in your VN with the same light as your options. That way you can pick skins that look similar under the same light conditions as well. From the ones I rendered, for example, Josie 8's skin stands out as looking quite different to the others (which has to do with her skin settings out of the box). This might mean that if you were to pick that skin, then it might differ a lot in style to your other characters. Especially as we're talking about a VN and not real life. However, keep in mind that Josie 8 skin actually rendered the fastest, so that might be worthy of consideration as well.

Oh wow! I change my vote for Olivia HD or Josie 8.

Ok, maybe I didn't make it completely clear in my request :).

I already own all of these skins, I can already see how they look.

My problem is in choosing one just by how they look.

I was thinking that some of the veterans here could point out which maps are higher quality so that I don't have to pick one from all of the ones I mentioned.

I just rendered them all, I will try ro put them together similar to what Phoenix did and add them here.

They're all Genesis 8 characters, all using 4k maps.  How can you say one character is higher quality, when the only difference is the Iray surface properties they use. You could probably turn any of them into Babina by copying over her surface properties without the textures.

I think there can definately be differences in quality.

It matters the attention to detail.

It matters how much information the bump/normal maps have.

It matters if the diffuse map was created just by changing the coloring of an already existing map or specifically for that character.

It matters if the diffuse maps only contain normal coloring or distinct, unique features that add realism to it.

For example I think Dain maps are amazing and I would rate them clearly higher than for example Giovanni in quality.

Unfortunately I do not have enough experience yet to determine the quality difference between 2 sets of maps unless it is pretty big.

The characters you chose (that I had) all have great skins (quality), so it comes down to which one fits with your character the most. You'll know if they have a bad or less than stellar skin when you can notice it right away, especially when you compare skins (example here. You can clearly see Lee and Jurou have much better skins than the rest of the characters). However, the most important aspect at the end of the day should be which skin makes your character feel "right" or brings her closer to your vision.

You'll find that changing lights, shader settings, and camera angle with bring out different details.

Any texture you have, with the possible exception of those showing more wear-and-tear will be suitable; if the character has not lead such a sheltered, pampered life (or she drinks, smokes and likes outdoor pursuits), then her skin will reflect that.

I customise all my textures; I find that during that customisation, features not initially visible would appear later.

I'm also curious, what do you mean by quality skin?

Josie 8 is most realistic looking in my eyes. The higher detailed maps don't neccessarily mean they are higher quality. Josie 8 is most 'naturally' realistic.

That drives me nuts when I am doing a series in different settings. Pick a skin in first setting, looks great! Next setting, looks like a totally different person lol.

That's a really great comparison! I have a few of characters that use those skins on my wishlist, so that's helped me choose what to go for if they're on sale.

BTW Is that a custom head morph? I generally don't think the younger/teen faces look good but this one looks very natural and not like a caricature.

Glad the chart was helpful! And yes, the head was a quick mix I made for that comparison but sadly I didn't save it. I remember it was a mix of Robynn 8 but I can't remember which other two characters I mixed in. Maybe it was 50% Robynn 8 + 40% Olivia + 30-40% Bridget 8.
