Export full character from Daz to Blender on a Mac?

Hi everyone!

I've been using Daz Studio for a little bit more than a week now, and I'm having a blast.

However, I'm using a Mac with an AMD card - Radeon Pro 580 8 GB - making Iray rendering quite slow.

I was therefore considering exporting what I create in Daz to Blender, and render from there with the AMD Radeon ProRender plugin. If I have understood things correctly, that should speed things up (keep in mind I'm still new to all of this).

Is this doable on a Mac, though?

Let's say I have created a character in Daz, fully clothed, some morphs here and there, et cetera; can I export all of that as is to Blender, and just render from there? (I'm not gonna create or add anything extra in Blender - just render.)

How about that same character, complete with a background to render?

Is that possible, and if so, how do I do it? The tutorials I have managed to find has unfortunately been targeting PC users, and also been quite old.

All feedback is greatly appreciated.

It's very possible to export a scene in OBJ format to render in Blender, but i am not a Mac user, so don't know if it's an issue with Macs. You could just try it and see.

  • I have not tried it, but I can think of no reason why the Diffeomorphic exporter wouldn't work. There's no part that seems architecture specific; the export done by a script in Daz and the .duf file itself, and the import is all in Blender's embedded Python engine. If all your materials are converted to IRay already (and you don't forget to switch to Cycles in Blender before importing), all your materials should convert reasonably well.

But be aware that things will look subjectively "good" in Blender, but perhaps not exactly like they do in Daz, out of the box. Cycles and the Blender node system are extremely powerful, it can do anything that IRay can, but you should not expect that it's going to look exactly like IRay, if that's what you want, without help. But if you are willing to invest the time in learning Blender's material node system, I'll wager that you'll end up preferring it because the things you can do with it are just mind blowing, compared to IRay. So think of it as an opportunity to make better, more creative renders.

    Right on the money!

I've actually been wanting to try Blender for quite some time now, but decided to learn Daz first. But then this whole render thing came out of nowhere for me (before I downloaded Daz, I had no idea what "rendering" even ment).

I've now downloaded Blender, and am absorbing tutorials on YT. Haven't tried exporting from Daz yet, but hopefully everything will work out fine. I don't mind the renders not being identical to Iray, if it means the renders won't take as painfully long as they do with the Iray/AMD combination. Time will tell.

    Thanks for the input, man!

I find something new on blendernation.com literally everyday. Good luck!

That's not entirely true. Using the cycles nodes is equivalent to using shader bricks in iray. While using the iray uber shader is equivalent to using the principled shader in cycles. Luckily the shader bricks are not used by daz assets, and they're not supported by diffeomorphic. Then unfortunately the uber shader is more flexible than the principled shader, in that the uber shader allows to define both pbr and non-pbr aka specular materials, while the principled shader only allows for pbr materials.

That's why, when converting from iray to cycles with diffeomorphic, it is better to choose bsdf instead of principled in the materials settings.

I was referring to the tight integration with the object's geometry that the Blender node system provides? For example, with shader bricks, could you use a texture, color ramp, an alpha map, and the normal vectors together with a math node in order to simulate dust trapped in the creases of an object, but not in the smoother parts? If it's possible, then I'll just have to accept that the problem is not shader bricks, but rather the fact that I moved my rendering to Blender before I had learned IRay very well...

I have no idea of what is possible with shader bricks, I guess it should have access to the full mdl features. Cycles has a much better and faster denoiser though, especially if you use the intel one. In my opinion this is the most important feature for production. Not to mention eevee vs iray interactive where there's no way iray can win.

The denoiser is not usable for animations due to the flickering cause by differing of the filtering of each frame.... I turn off veiwport Denoising when rendering EEVEE animations.
