not brushes, not alpha masks, no transparency maps

just geometry shaped like lightning bolts,

    Oldie but goodie: RDNA Atmospherics - Lightning Vol 1. Takes to the Iray Emissive shader very well.

    Hi @Mystarra  do you need to animate it?

    because Nerd3d has a fire and smoke tool that you can animate lighting with works great.. its not iray but it still renders in iray great without changing anything,.   I would post a link to it  but i think it would be removed because its at hivewire3ddotcom , anyway look for nerd3d fire & smoke tool there I use it a lot for stuff and it works for poser, daz and I am sure i but think ti works in carrara too

     you can see a example of it in use in this web comic you can the colors of it too

    something like the highlander quickening.  got some wizard spells need fx
