How to create the thick hazy look from mely3d promos

Hi Gang,

This has been bothering me for years, and I figured I would finally just ask. How do I create that same thick atmospheric air look that all of mely3d promos have in them? Here's an example:

https://www.daz3d.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/t/starship-interior-06-daz3d.jpg

I don't mean the depth of field effect either. I mean the way the light looks like it is is a heavy atmosphere, like thick air, or something. Is this just as simple as placing a cube over the whole scene with some particular shader or value on it? Or it is something more nefarious?

You need something to give an atmospheric affect; there is an ;atmocam' for Iray, and the effect can be done with 3delight too.

Apparently, I have this: https://www.daz3d.com/atmocam-for-iray but have never used it; as least as far as I recall.

You might also find that bloom helps, especially around the lights; how you go about it depends on the engine you're using to render.

All things now firmly on my radar! Thanks for the suggestions :D

I am using Iray exclusively, so I guess I need to do a little leg work. Was this a feature built in to 3delight?

There is a newer version of atmocam:

I have it but haven't tried it yet either.

Also looks as if they have used Bloom.

The lights definitely look very bloomy.  Sickle Yield has a tutorial on adding haze using the primitive method you described.

  • Very interesting. Do the two effectively do the same thing? Atmo2 and creating a primative with SSS?

I can do that in Photoshop CLICK it's done. I won't win any points from those who don't have Photoshop or do have it and don't know how nor will the Render Purists give me any credit, they will call it a "workaround." But it's really really really easy to do that in Photoshop. FYI for those who are open to workarounds.
  • What's your method to do it in Photoshop?

I don't have Photoshop but I have Affinity Photo which has similar tools. I would imagine this method would work in Photoshop. Not one-click though.

    postwork is certainly easier

Carrara has volumetric fog and Octane converts it to openVDB and I still prefer to do it in post yes

Crikey y caramba! Many, many thanks for mentioning Affinity Photo! I've never heard of it before and it's just what I'm after for my current LT and future PC. And what an amazingly low price! I have an old version of PhotoShop on my ancient PC which I'll lose once I upgrade, but PhotoShop is just too expensive these days, particularly that you can no longer get it on disk.

The atmos-cams works good takes a little bit to set up to look right though. but still work great,.  I kind of  like to use cheats for creating fog and atmospheres, most of the time I'll use planes. and layer them in front of the cam until i get the effect i am looking for.

But I found this set by wicked creations The Forbidden Forest https://www.daz3d.com/the-forbidden-forest  set with 4 fog dome/spheres props that are amazing, not bad on resources and can be moved around to fit your needs and it kit bashes with everything i have tried the fogs spheres on with. for the price of those fog cams you could buy this set and have some fun props to boots. but its just a suggestion I like to do things outside the box

    @Ivy,

Thank you for the link. I have been watching this thread, as fog is something I have tried to use within DAZ Studio, and my computer has complained and gone on strike for days afterwards. It even filed a brief with the CPU Workers Union! How I missed that forest I have no idea. Now wishlisted for when the money is in the budget.

I have no issue with postwork, but, I buy the products, then never seem to find the time to figure out how to use. I buy the tutorials as well. On me totally. If someone else has been able to, I am all for supporting them in their efforts.

your welcome. I tend to look at things a little differently than others maybe because i try do animation with this content and need the best solutions for reducing resources being used  for rendering.  I have tons of little tricks like these. But unfortunately i won't be posting those type help videos anytime soon.

There are a few products that use transmapped planes for fog and other atmospheric effects:

These shader and prop sets from Fuseling have a wide variety of shapes, materials and shaders, including many atmospheric types:
