Hello!

Is there an easy way to turn off SSS when using Olympia?

(I sometimes get problems with SSS combined with Uberlight, the renders crashing)

Hmm. Good question. Would like to know as well, since I'm honestly not overly fond sss. I see you can reduce it.

    Define "easy".

I have 7zip and notepad++ on my PC. It took me under 30 seconds to go to C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\People\Genesis 2 Female\Materials\Olympia, open Olympia 6 Skin SSS 25.duf, replace all the 0.25 with 0.00, and save as Olympia 6 Skin SSS 00. I saved it as plain text, didn't bother to recompress in 7zip. I only do that for big files.

And then I remembered that I actually own "DSON Editor", LOL. But 7zip and notepad are perfectly adequate for this job. Oh, and copy the PNG from the 25 to a matching 00, too.

The big question is, can I turn the SSS up 5.0? 0.75 is so "human". Olympia deserves alabaster, don't you think.

Isn't a "Subsurface Off - On" right bellow Subsurface Color, in Surfaces? Why a text editor? Obviously I'm missing something. :gulp:

Once you've edited the DUF, you have a 1 click solution in you content library that you can use over and over, instead of having to go through all the surfaces each time manually, changing just the right 8 or 10 of them.

Wouldn't it also work to adjust the material in Surfaces and save a preset?

In the surface pane select skin, go to SubSurfaceScattering and set it to 0 - bingo, turned SSS on all skin surfaces off - except the lips, you've got to do them seperately.

    I did you a preset.

But since I don’t have Olympia, I don’t know what parts use SSS.
Try it, if you find its doing funny stuff, then try creating a material preset.

just load the character, turn off all the SSS in Surfaces as mentioned above, go to Save As/Material Preset, deselect everything and make sure you leave selected only the SSS On-Off check box on each body part.
This will create a preset that will only turn off the SSS without touching other settings.

Or simply turn off all SSS in Surfaces and save the material preset as it is. This will create a complete preset with all the Olympia settings minus the SSS.

    :)

It would, if you got the right 10 out of the 18 surfaces (both numbers estimated, not going to fire up DS to count them).

Getting the surfaces wrong is all too easy, which is why we see figures in the DAZ store with glowing nostrils, teeth, or mouth interiors. The way I did it, it's exactly as correct (or exactly as wrong, LOL) as the 25%, 50%, and 75% SSS shader presets that come with Olympia. Consistency is good, most of the time.

See, there is a method to my madness, after all.
