Genesis Generation X2 question

So Genesis Generation X2 is half off, and a long time ago I was interested in it but wasn't sure it was worth the price. Is the product still being supported, is it worth getting? Is G8 support coming?

I don't know if I even need it anymore, should I just buy it and if it doesn't do what I want just return it?

I don't believe it is being supported, the original developer passed away a few years ago. So, no Genesis 8 support. It will work between Genesis, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, and bring Generation 3 (V3, M3, etc.) and Generation 4 (V4, M4, K4) up to the Genesis level (1, 2, 3). Generation 4 to Genesis is built-in, To get to Genesis 2, you need the GenX2 Addon for Genesis 2. To get to Genesis 3, you need both the GenX2 Addon for Genesis 2 and GenX2 Addon for Genesis 3. For Generation 3, there is a whole set of them (each one was different), but that's for really old stuff.

Genesis 8 is starting to get some support from other vendors (RiverSoft Art, Zev0).

And, yes, there is the 30-day guarantee.

I do sometimes make use of GenX because, at least for the moment, the developers of the newer converters seem to be assuming that the interest is mostly in G3 to G8 transfers, and GenX does bridge the gap for older content by letting you convert to G3 from which you can then convert to G8. (And this does work reasonably well. I've successfully transferred pre-G3 characters to G8 via a two step process.

The *other* thing it does that other converters so far are overlooking is transfers from male to female and vice versa.

The question is really how many of your pre-G3 characters you're attached to; if it's a reasonable number, GenX is currently the only option that will definitely handle these earlier generations. Other converters may come with time, but they're not guaranteed.

  • Matt, I think it's not so much what the developers are 'assuming' as much as its simpler to work from newer back to older meshes and filling the most immediate need/gap first- with gen x there was already conversion tools for older gen characters but nothing yet for G8, so that would be the first, most immediate character to set up transfers first. Others may yet be added, but have less immediacy- after all, many of us already have converted older morphs (Although zev's new transfer tool and the way it transfers jcms and mcms and related morphs makes it FABULOUSLY helpful and if it gets versions for older generations I'm definitely buying them too, hands down).

As for male to female morphs, the hard part there for every developer is the breasts- they're often baked into a morph and wouldn't really have a way to do that if it's not the default female/male shapes.  That said I bet Zev could figure it out but i'm guessing it'd be a ton of work, and there's so many wild shapes. :D I think zev0 has a list a mile long of things people want... heh.

Btw, I converted over all my V4/M4 philosopher's egg characters (mouse, pic, horse, rabbit, badger) etc... slowly with the genx stuff and then finally via Xtransfer and Xtransfer was by far the simplest and fastest. :) Needs tweaking as the GenX stuff lost some of the jcms and rigging and stuff- only got the morphs and some of them a bit messed up like nails, but fairly redoable in G8 anyway. But the Xtransfer from Zev handled the rest of the transfers really well, and i'm thrilled to have my old favorite shapes.... Yes, if Zev works backwards compatible transfers, he will get my money again and again and again. ;) Will it happen?  Dunno, like i said, there's already converters there, and Zev's prob got tons to do already

....yeah it gives me fits when I try to create child characters, both male and female, as I also use Skin Builder Pro (which doesn't create skins for Genesis males) as it makes getting the chest perfectly flat extremely difficult, even using the Growing Up breast/chest morphs. I find that using the "Breasts Gone" morph (either in the standard G3 body morphs or Breast Control utility tends to distort the mesh which can affect clothing fits.

  • I bought it and installed with DIM, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly the source button is greyed out.

Most of my characters I want to go from G2 to G3 or G8 is there a better option than genx2

You need to add the serial number of the plug-in to use it. Also it needs to be installed in the same Content Library as the main Genesis figures, plus the source figures like V4, M4 etc.

  • I am using it with the serial number activated, you can't even open the genx2 window without it. The file downloaded by dim has no content that would go in a library folder. All files go in the dazstudio folder from what I see.

Do you have the G2 and G3 add-ons? You'll need them to convert morphs from G2 to G3.

GenX2 doesn't support G8, sadly the PA who developed it passed away a few years ago so there never was a G8 add-on. You can use GenX2 to go up to G3 then use one of the new G3 to G8 converters though.

Are you using the main release, or the beta? It tends to have less issues in the main release.

  • I have tried with both releases. I did not purchase the g2 or g3 add on because I wanted to see if it would work before spending another $20. I watched 2 different tutorials and read the pdf, but everything just assumes the product works. There are other options greyed out beside the source, but I didn't mention them because I couldn't get past choosing the source and am assuming they need the source chosen first.

If you didn't buy the G2 and G3 adons, then I assume you are trying to convert a V4 or M4 to Genesis? The source button will be greyed the first time you use it - as I recall you have to hit the "Load" button, navigate to your V4 or M4 figure .cr2 and load that. On subsequent uses GenX2 should remember them and show them from the "Source" button.

(Note I'm speaking from memory - I'm not at my Daz Studio PC just now)

  • I will check out the link to the support thread. I think I am getting too old for this hobby it just seems so complicated for my brain these days. I tried to understand the simulation stuff they added and I think it almost gave me a stroke.

  • After watching two youtube videos and reading the manual and a tutorial here in the forums, the best I was able to do was change the scale on the target figure. I have submitted a ticket for refund hopefully all goes well.
