Problem with universal tool and selection

I've just got a new computer, updating from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and from Studio 4.11 to 4.12.

Before, with Win7/4.11, I could click into an empty area of a scene -- or another part of the secene -- then click on a character in the scene, and it would select the root level of that character.

Now, with Win10/4.12, when I do the exact same thing -- click something else, then the character -- it selects the specific part of the character that I click on, whether it's the head or abdomen or leg or whatever.

I hope it's just something terribly simple that I've forgotten, but how do I get the previous behavior back? What setting do I need to change?

    When you have the universal tool active, go to the Tool Settings Tab.

    At the bottom of the tab is an option where you can choose the selection behavior, root first or node first.

    Thank you! I knew that it had to be something simple that I was overlooking, and when I'm not doing weird things with rigidity maps, I always forget the tool settings tab even exists.
