Super slow renders ?????

Hi friends, took a break from 3D for a few months.  I return a few days ago and noticed renders are super slow !!!!!!!!!  I'm using DS 4.10, Nvidia  1080 FTW, driver V441.12,.  I tried a few experimaents, with scenes I created in the past, that took 10-15 minutes to complete render, now at 30-40 minutes still hasn't reached 1% converged.

I enjoy creating on DS but render times are ridiculous, which truly discourages me from creating.

Anyone else having issues with each Nvidia update ??  Thanks for any feedback.

...did you check the advanced render settings to see if it is using the GPU or defaulting to the CPU?

yes, sounds very much like your renders are running CPU only

Only GPU selected.  I noticed with each Nvidia update, renders getting more and more slower......... Hmmm

....check the log file.  Sounds maybe like the programme isn;'t accessing the GPU for some reason.

Hi KK, thanks I'll do some research,  Creating scenes is fun, rendering is a real &^%%$$#@%$ Rofl !!  angry

...yeah on my assembly system I have a only 4 GB 750Ti which I use for doing proofs (848 x 1,200) of custom characters I create, and even with fairly detailed clothing hair, as well as a couple props I am getting renders between 3 - 7 minutes.

    I'm using the 4.12 Beta.

you definitely want to check the log file.

I believe that even if you only have GPU selected in the settings, it will still drop to CPU only if for example your scene does not fit into your GPU VRAM or there is some other issue preventing the GPU from working. The log file will indicate if its a CPU or GPU render

...shouldn't be an issue with 8 GB unless one is creating really epic level scenes. Furthermore the OP mentioned that the same scenes rendered in about half the time so it has to be an internal issue.

Another way to check if the GPU is being recognised properly by the system is to download and install the free GPU-Z utility.

Thanks for everyones assistance,   GPU is working properly.  I have no clue what's going on......  I restart my computer, straight to render.  Now, it's zipping along again.  Wow ! goodness, go figure, Rofl !!!!

Sometimes tech can be that way. My guess is something went screwy in Daz for Iray and would not recover with a restart or two. I have had that happen, but that was ages ago. It might have been 4.10.

You should check out the 4.12 beta. You might see things go slightly faster, and the beta doesn't overwrite the general release. So you can test it out without losing 4.10.

...yeah I've never had to shut the programme and/or system down to clear the GPU with the 4.12 beta. I sort of remember some such issue with 4.10 and earlier versions.

One nice feature with the beta is the strand hair tool (basically Garibaldi Express integrated into the Daz programme but now with Iray rendering capability).

  • Are you closing render preview windows once they complete? If you don't the VRAM doesn't get released.

Having a similar problem with Daz 4.11 when I set it to render with GPU* only--it's V E R Y slow and the render is all black (Checked that headlamp was off and used an environment/light preset that came with the scenery model). When I tried it again with both CPU and GPU checked in render settings it went fast--which is usual for my computer--and was well-lit

So I know where to look for the log files but how do I find the specfic log for the render than gave me trouble, since I have done at least one since then?

Is shifting to Texture Shaded or another non-Iray Drawstyle the same as closing?

Which driver version do you have - right-click on Desktop>nVidia Control Panel?

All I know is with each update of anything, technology get's worse not better............

  • I have the opposite issue. Strangely, 3Delight renders have slowed to a crawl. Much slower than Iray.
