Lycan HD without Landon 8?

Is it possible to use Lycan HD without buying Landon 8, or does it require the Landon 8 UVs? I can't seem to find any info on that. I realize the shape may be off somewhat.

  • Landon 8 doesn't have custom UVs, so as far as I know it would just be the shape that was off from that intended.

  • I have that, and it doesn't look like the Lycan uses any part of Landon 8, so no he's not required.

  • ok, thanks guys.

  • One other question, I haven't started using an Genesis 8 figures yet, I'm really behind the times, but is there a list of which Genesis 8 figures have unique UVs? (Or do they all just use the same Genesis 8F/8M UVs now? wow that would be nice, but if so I'm surprised I am just now finding that out.) I don't want to buy something that has other requirements.I've made that mistake in the past and then I wind up having to buy more stuff than I intended.

  • None of them use any unique UVs. Just Base G8M/F.

Which is something I'm ENORMOUSLY grateful for, with this generation.

@TGSNT, The Lycan uses 100% of Landon's body and 50% 100% of his head. Dialing out Landon 8 affects the height and the face somewhat. The most obvious difference is the Lycan is significanly shorter without Landon.

I'm rendering a couple of images for you, so you can compare. (I will say, without Landon, he's still an ugly cuss!)

My apologies for the delay with this post. I had already posted images and such when I realized I may have made a mistake on something. I went back to check, and sure enough, the Lycan used both the body and head of Landon 8 at 100%. It was my changes for a particular scene that had Landon 8 Head at 50%. See the bottom of the post…

    Here ya' go, @TGSNT:

I used the Lycan in a scene earlier this year, so I extracted him from the other scene and added some light. I did not attempt to adjust the pose after dialing out Landon 8, and the shorter, less bulky version ends up intersecting the wall a bit with the left "hand". Also, he sank into the steps a tad bit. After realizing I'd changed the default value of Landon's Head, I went back and redid the images. I also changed back to materials from the product, as I had tweaked them for my scene. Here I use the white materials for both skin and hair.

If you do decide to get him, I think you could get some interesting results by dialing in the body and some of the head of just about any of the named figures for Genesis 8. In my original scene, I dialed in Ollie 8's head to 50%, and dialed Landon's down to 50%. I also used some other facial morphs to further change his look. He was very deep in the darkness for that scene, so for fun, I did a render of him alone, very similar to those above. As I mentioned above, I modified the settings for the skin texture, and I kept the hair for the brown skin. I also made the eyes emissive so they would glow in the dark of the original scene. You can see him here, in my Gallery.

    Yep. I'm back.

I had to redo my images 'cause I screwed up. All's good now.

Thanks so much for those renders, I'm definitely going to pick him up now to go with the Brute. I'll add a little more meat to his bones. I wish I had known that all these Gen8 characters with 'prequisites' are really just for shaping purposes, unlike previous Gens where there were different UVs involved. It really changes things a lot from a budgetary standpoint. I've held off for quite a while becuase I assumed I needed much more than I did to move forward with G8. Granted I still need a bunch of morph package add ons, but I no longer need to get so many Daz Official character releases now.  anyway, thanks again.

    You're welcome, @TGSNT.

However, not all PA characters built on a base figure are going to work so well without the base figure. Whenever one is released, there are always those who ask what one or the other of the addon characters look like without the base. And someone who's already purchased will do a quick render and post it. Most of the time, those characters look fine, but not so much like the promos. I suspect the more extreme the character, like the Lycan, the more likely you can still use it without the base figure.

It's definitely been a blessing that the G8s all use the base UVs for their gender. And they're the same base UVs as the base for G3, so materials for any G3 also work on G8, (though if you have a "7" named figure, you'll still need to the UVs, which RedzStudios packaged up and made available for us.) If you select both the figure and the eyelashes, you can apply the materials to both with one double-click of their "all" preset. G8 materials will also fit on G3, but the H.Materials presets won't apply directly to G3, because of the eyelashes, making it a bigger hassle to use G8 on G3.

I think I may be having a bit too much fun with this. By himself, without Landon 8, the Lycan holds up quite well. Now if you don't own Landon 8, (or even if you do,) he mixes really well with other characters. The following renders use the Lycan at 100% with Landon 8 at 0% as the base, and then have other characters dialed in.

    1) Eibhear/Lycan mix; Eibhear uses Vladimir 8, but I also dialed his morph to 0%:

    2) Glumgurgle/Lycan mix; Glumgurgle uses Ollie 8, so his morph is dialed to 0%. (Ollie actually makes the character smaller and thinner, so there's an advantage to not using him.) Sadly, I just found out Glumgurgle is no longer available.

3)The Monster HD/Lycan mix; The Monster HD at 100%:

    4) The Old Chap/Rex/Lycan mix; The Old Chap at 100% and Rex Body at 70%. Old Chap reduces the body size so for the bulk I used Rex, who uses the G8M Body Morphs to achieve his body shape:

    5) Kane/Lycan mix; Kane at 100%, Kane also uses the G8M Body Morphs to achieve his body shape:

I used the brown materials for these renders, too, so you can see both, between the two posts. It would be really easy to create a group of these with very different looks just by using different characters mixed in. I also tried him with Troll HD (for Floyd 8,) and Maxx HD (for Brute 8,) but both of those were too big to fit in the opening here. (Maxx might have fit, but I failed to notice he uses Brute 8 when I was dial-spinning.) As it is, I would have to make adjustments to the pose to actually use any of the above combinations in this doorway.

Anyway, I hope you guys had as much fun looking as I did dial-spinning!
