List of all Daz Original figures G1-G3
in The Commons
As a newbie to Daz3d and 3D art in general, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the different figures avaialble and made a chart for myself. I don't own all of the figures for myself but I would love to get appraisals from owners of any of them. What are the benefits of that figure for you? In what scenarios do you heavily utitlize that particular figure?
Also, if anyone could help me with the missing heights, it would be greatly appreciated. :)
PDF attached.
Hitomi and Skyler I know are not Daz originals but they seem to be widely accepted and fit well with the others.

Hitomi was made by the artists who has made all the daz figures since Generation 4. A seasoned pro. So that is why she fits in.
Regarding the figures for Genesis. Hitomi, Skyler and even Micheal and Victoria are NOT figures. The only actual figures are Genesis, Genesis 2 Female, Genesis 2 Male, Genesis 3 Female (and one day Genesis 3 Male).
The others are SHAPES with corrective morphs and UV maps that are special to them. They are not figures. They are Morphs, They are Characters. But they use Genesis Figures as a platform.
So what you are asking is what characters do people like. I say it's genesis and I mix stuff up cause the stock figures are way to identifable when left stock.
Oh and there were 3 more Daz original genesis monsters. At least 3 more.
I actually made a list of Character Support Compatibility a while back:

Then there's this thread:

Looking at your PDF chart it looks like you put way to much thinking into it, especially with the sizes and figure shapes when all of that can be changed in an instant with a turn of a dail or two. Just keep in mind that the base figures (V4, M4, G1, G2F, G2M, or GF3) are all that matter and everything else are just addons to the base.
IMO genesis 1 or 2 are still the best new investments for now since you can utilize most V4, M4, genesis 1 and/or genesis 2 content with the additional purchase of a few items and Genx. Or you can start from scratch with GF3 which is a great base figure, but very limited at the moment when compared to what you can use now with previous figures generations content. I still get quite a bit of use out of Genesis 1 since i can use most V4 or M4 figures and content with it as well as quite a few creature and alien morphs.
Ah! Thank you for that clarification. I've only had Daz for a month now so I'm still trying to recognize the terms. I wondered about the benefit of having a bunch of characters versus getting the morph packs for the Genesis figures (which I did opt for). I personally have found it suits my need to customize a particular face/body. Thank you again, larsmidnatt!
RCDeschene, your chart is great! I would love to hold on to this in the event that I want to invest in a particular character. Also bookmarking the 2nd link. Thanks!
Slightly off topic, but it seems I have better luck finding topics when I search google with 'daz" thrown into the search versus using the forum's own search field. Is it just me?
Not just you, I find a lot of sites it's more effective to use Google search with site:blahblahblah.com
I totally agree about the usefullness of working with the base figures. It's the route that I took because it felt like I could have more control and options as well as it was more economical. But the Daz original characters are very enticing still, lol!
What do you all use the program/content for mostly?
The core uses for DS are renders and animation, but there are many uses for your renders and animations such as posters, book covers, game trailers, etc
Lee 6: 5'7"
Teen Jayden: 5'8"
Michael 6: 6'2"
Ninieve 6: 5'7.5"
Aiko 4 & 5: 5'10" (Legacy shapes on G2F)
Girl 6: 5'10" (Legacy Shape on G3F)
Gia 6: 5'10.5"
Olympia 6: 5'9"
Steph 6: 5'5"
Steph 5: 5'2"
Steph 5 Model: 5'6"
Victoria 5: 5'6"
Victoria 5 Supermodel: 5'10"
David 5: 5'10.5"
Freak 5: 7'
Measured the shapes (and as legacy shapes for the ones I don't have originals of!) I have... Hope this helps your chart for 'base' character/platform heights!
I have found that customization is pretty versatile between the characters. I am heavily invested in Genesis and Genesis 2 (I don't have and am not planning on Genesis 3 at this time). Some characters are best suited for Genesis rather than Genesis 2 and vise-versa.
The Pro of Genesis is that everything is interchangeable between male/female and human/monster. That means every clothing item and utility which was designed for Genesis women can be used on Genesis men (like facial feature morphs). This is a good thing in that the vast majority of items are made for women. Armor will adjust to the male figure and will look fine (you may need to tweak the textures to make it look masculine).
The Pro of Genesis 2 is the separation between the genders allows for more realistic clothing and bodies (especially right/left differences for asymmetric faces and bodies). The frustration for Genesis 2 Males is that there isn't as much available for the men. I see muscle flexion for women, but don't you think the guys could really use some of that too?)
Character Customization:
This is the fun part. You can interchange the textures (skins) and the morphs between the Characters. You don't have to stick with the skins and morphs from a particular package unless you want to use that character out of the box. For example, I made a female Genesis character look mean with a neutral expression just by adding a very small amount of Tough Guy (which came with Freak 5). Eyes and can be used for any character (Genesis only fits Genesis) and (Genesis 2 only fits Genesis 2). You can exchange lips between the women. I have even successfully used a Genesis female skin on a Genesis male (as long as he was fully clothed).
You can also play with the surfaces tab and diffuse color to modify skin color. I've hat LOTS of fun with that.
As far as shaping is concerned, open the shaping tab and Actor, and you will find various body shapes (some from characters, some from the muscularity morphs). Same with Head.
You can also mix clothing pieces from different clothing sets, though it can be a challenge to fit them. Fit Control is a great utility for this and works on Genesis and Genesis 2.
I disagree. Maybe it all that matters if you're a modeler, or you really know how to dial together some unique characters. But not everyone is like that, myself included. Some people may be looking for a very specific angle or overall shape for a very specific genre of character that no amount of available scaling can achieve for them and they don't have the time, skill, or patience to dig into a modeler.
I remember that once Olympia hit the store, a lot of people confessed that she had a unique curve to her that couldn't be mimicked with any dialing in combination with the G2F Voluptuous Evo Morph. Not only that, she was one of the top-selling characters for Gen 6 because of it.
Point taken RCDeschene. Obviously many more feel like you since DAZ keeps pumping them out and they wouldn't do it unless they sell.. I guess for me spinning dials is such a simple process I couldn't imagine it being an issue for anyone. I don't pay much attention to the addon figures since coming close with morphs makes more sense for me and I actually enjoy creating characters. While I agree that there are going to be a few shapes/morphs that you only get with the addon characters, it's usually not enough to justify the price in most cases for me. Plus I feel the extra UV layouts are just overkill.
Even if you like to fiddle with the dials it might be interesting to get some of the base figure as additional dials, or as starting points for more fiddling. And if you wait they usually get sold quite cheap at some point.
The UV layouts end up being a workflow issue for me sometimes so I try to stick to only a couple. Saves me a lot of time in the long run if I need to reuse certain elements.
Spinning dials is fun.
And looking at those heights, I must say again the Daz characters skew tall. I keep forgetting Aiko is practically 6 feet tall. She should be like 5'2 :) But I do know for me it's more convient they are taller when it comes to props and vehicles and poses lol. It's not hard to shrink them down but sometimes I forget and end up with a 6 footer.
True and I have one (Giselle) that I got on special and that had something specific I (and a commission client) wanted to add to the gene pool based on the promo images. If my commission hadn't of pointed it out though, I might not have pulled that trigger though.
I do nothing BUT spin dials! I rarely use a character "out of the box" so to speak, unless I need an "extra" for my scene or am running a test for a new outfit. I swap textures between figures and customize galore.
I do understand that some people are not proficient at the dials and admit that they take some practice. I recommend just fiddling with them - even if the result is ugly and you don't save it - you will have learned something.
Thanks so much for that!
Everyone brings up some really good points and I'll definitely keep them in mind as I begin to develop a workflow in DAZ. I decided to work on using the dialers to recreate some of my sister's drawn characters. I did find that using a base (for her style I used the Aiko 5 legacy shape for the head) made a lot of sense for the style I was trying to emulate.
Oh, and whoever said that any searching should be done with google for finding a particular topic on the DAZ forum versus the search here wasn't kidding. That is so weird. I hunted a good deal on how I could get some custom brows on a character (that has a skin with no brows) and when I went to google, "BAM", topics on brows and geometry shells pop up.
Once I get a little more learned I think I'm going to test some renders to share. :)
Is there a simple list of charactor names with the Genisis version? Seems it would be in this sites FAQ section right?
When looking for assets I find Daz naming structure to give no clue to the Genesis figure it was built upon.
There are four sets now that I know of.
It appears DAZ finally got the hint with "8" and name those charactors with the digit 8 in them but the rest have numbers in charactor names that do not relate to which set they belong. Victoria 4 for instance...there are no Genisis 4 charactors. Why "4"
Which belong together?
---------------------------------------------
I'm by no means an expert, but as far as my understanding, there are eight and a bit generations:
Genesis jumped to version 8 to avoid the confusion with the characters and the Genesis version having different numbers, particularly as Generation 4 content is still widely used and would have been particularly confusing.
this nay halp you understand a bit
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/24257/daz-3d-human-figures-a-history/p1
Simple answer is the 1st to 4th generation DAZ figures are just that from Vicky 1 up to Victoria/Michael/Freak/Aiko/Hiro/Stephanie 4. Genesis became the standard figure (with built in morphs for Male/Female) and use a much more advanced system than prior generations. However, since DAZ kept the numbering representations for individual morphs that match up to the prior generations (thus Genesis 1 has the 5 series i.e. V5/M5/F5/A5/H5/S5). This has continued up until Genesis 3 (consequently adopting the 7 identifier for the morphs i.e. V7/M7 and so on). Genesis 8 is technically "Genesis 4", but to simplify things, the numbering convention for the generations as a whole has been adopted.
