Clearing HDR backgrounds and lighting

How do you clear HDR backgrounds and lighting that do not show in the Scene tab? I want to make the workspace neutral again.

Well, to clear an HDRI is easy: Render Tab > Render Editorand click the default button.

Note that the Studio default for Iray uses an HDRI.

I have some HDRIs that I picked up that seem to be a part of the scene, but have no scene item to delete like your usual domes. They show up in the viewport even when iray is not in use and are separate (and even block) the HDRI in the render tab. The only way I've figured how to remove them is to save the scene as a scene subset and import into a new scene. But it would be nice to know how to remove them properly.

In Render Settings > Environment, you can change your lighting from Dome and Scene to Scene only, and don't show the dome.  That way only the lights you put into the scene will show up in your Iray renders and viewport.  If you only remove the HDRI rather than change to Scene only, by clicking on the little HDRI image, that will get you neutral D/S Sun/Sky lighting.

Does resetting the HDRI still bring up a weird time of day thing in the latest Daz? Its actually not the default HDRI that a new scene loads with.

If that is the case and you want the original default, instead of resetting just replace the HDRI texture. Click the texture box the HDRI is in to replace it like a normal surface setting. The original texture should still be listed, and it is called hdriruins500 or something like that.

Default environment settings have no HDRI map which essentially changes it to Sun/Sky. That's why you will get the time of day settings visible. If you want the environment/render settings that studio loads with, my best advice would be to load Studio, create a render settings preset (file/save as/render settings preset) and then you can just apply that preset to get yourself back to the load in settings whenver you need to.

What you do is go to Render Settings - Environment and where you see that tiny icon (it is a picture icon of the HDRI that you are currently using) click on it and choose none instead of an HDRI file.

Note that all of the suggestions above remove the HDRI from your scene. If your goal is simply to not have it showing when you're working on setting up your scene, but you want to keep the light, then you have a couple of other options.

    1. Change from Iray Preview to Texture Shaded view in the viewport

    2. Turn off "Draw Dome" on the Render Settings -> Environment tab.

Alternatively, if you want to setup all your own lights (without any HDRI at all), you can also just change the Environment option on Render Settings to 'Scene Only'.

@Skyewolf "Default environment settings have no HDRI map which essentially changes it to Sun/Sky."

Not true for me. Since Iray it has been the HDRruins that @outrider42 references.

Mine too, it defaults to the Ruins HDRI. When I purchase light sets that don’t affect render settings,  I’m always uncertain if they are intended to work with the default HDRI or as scene only. I wish products would specify this.
