Question regarding HD characters

JOdelJOdel Posts: 6,322

Here is the situation; I've built a character model using Josh Crockett's Hagred for G8F as the starting point.

She's a preset. I cannot find any dials with which to tone down the HD elements -- which are rather in excess of the requirements. I cannot find any dials or listing for the character in the shaping tab whatsoever.

Is there any way to find dials and adjust these settings? Are they hidden properties? In which tab? Is there some other way to do this without having to resort to a modeling program?

  • What subd level do you have her at?

Some HD characters have separate HD morph dials, whilst for others it’s just the one morph. If you show hidden properties and look at currently used with the character dialed up, it should be fairly clear if there are any hidden HD dials. Failing that, your best option is to reduce the subdivision to say, one, so that the HD details are not obvious. Remember to also set the render subdivision lower also, as it’s usually set at a division higher than the viewport.

I have her - she doesn't come with a separate dial for the HD details. However, you can dial most of the HD wrinkles and whatnot out by dropping the SubDivision Level to 1 (in the Parameters Tab) as Redz said, and in the Surfaces Tab dragging the Normal Map's value lower or even all the way to 0 if needed.

Well, I checked the show hidden properties box and a slider showed up when I selected the 'Show Currently Used'. That ought to do ge me a good deal forwarder.

I'll lower the subdivision as well. We'll see

    Thanks everyone..

Dial down the subd level. I built her at 4 but it should load in at 2. There may also be normal maps applied, but I can't recall off hand. Those can be removed in the surface tab if it applies.

If you need to dial down the HD portion of a morph, an option that should give you more control than just turning down the SubD would be to export the mesh as a Base resolution OBJ, then reimport it as a morph. (Although some times adjusting rigging to shape can be a little finicky, in this case you can copy the rigging across from the HD version).

You can then use different portions of the SD and HD morphs to control the strength of the HD. Alas, it only works on a full model level (there's no being able to turn down just the face HD morph), but it even theoretically lets you turn up the HD past 100%, by dialling in a negative value on the SD morph.
