Want GPU only rendering DON'T INSTALL 4.12

4.12 has removed the function of hardware selection it will run your CPU up to 100% with CPU completely de-selected either its a bug or intended makes no difference that is what 4.12 delivers

so should you want to do more than lock your computer down to just rendering a scene then 4.12 is not for you as it stands!

I have been using 4.12 Beta and now 4.12 on CPU only with only the occasional lock up, usually because it is using all my 16 GB of memory when doing a big scene. Today I was running a render on 4.12 and I started 4.12 Beta at the same time to do a test render on something else and I could still use my laptop email and internet.

OK but you using CPU only is relevant how when discussing USING GPU ONLY?

well when you can run something like 3Dsmax in the background  instead of looking up emails come back.

As you were told earlier, the version of Iray included in DS 4.12 has not removed the ability to use the GPU. It does have a more recent minimum driver requirement (430.86), as noted in the Highlights thread. Your other posts repeating this false statement have been removed.

  • I'm running a GPU only render on 4.12 right now. My CPU is essentially idle while the GPU's do the render.

Check all your settings and make sure Daz is set to use the GPU in the Nvidia control panel and that you have at least the minimum required GPU driver.

Just updated my drivers (game ready not creative) and that fixed my CPU hitting 100% on even the most basic Iray scene (one nude gray golem aka Genesis 1), now it sits under 40% during a render and around 27% with the viewport set to Iray.

Take back what I said about breaking stuff, but just having the driver info in a form post isn't good enough, that information should be on the download page as well as in DIM, that way more people will see it and not get caught out.

I'm running 4.12 Release version and my renders run on my 980TI. I'm using Nvidia driver version 430.86, which was the declared minimum for 4.12, I can run several applications in the background. I have the same experience as @kenshaw011267 . You'll generally get more help here with less attitude.

I commented because you aren't using your GPU, as has been pointed out, and it is dropping back to CPU which is locking up your computer. Changing settings will stop that happening when the CPU is being utilised to it's full capacity. Also check your memory usage as I find that locks the laptop more often than CPU usage. Increase the swap file size to give more virtual memory and move it to another drive other than the system drive if you can. I don't have 3Dsmax but, as I said, I have run two versions of Studio at the same time. I have also worked in Photoshop on photographs, Vegas Pro on videos and Magix Music Maker at times with Studio rendering in the background if that counts. I have also maxed the 16 GB of memory a few times without locking up completely. I hope you get everything sorted and you can get back to rendering soon.

the gpu is being run up as well. both are topping out but its moot since reverting to older version the thing is running like a clock again can render while rendering other programs maya illustrator and Max to get animations done instead of twiddling my thumbs waiting for a still to render..

as for people talking drivers using 436 which came out the day of 4.12 release 430 was the previous version.

as I said in the previous post ran a few comparisons and the results do not favor the new version of daz and it was using both the gpu and cpu to get inferior results

  • I use DS to make money I track my render times. 4.11 was awful, render times for me went up from 4.10. 4.12 has dropped render times and I never render with CPU. You have a problem with settings or your computer and rather than working with people to fix it you simply insist that things that are untrue are true.

  • If you are using the 436 drivers you certainly shouldn't have this in general - it's possible the occasional scene might tip over the memory limit in one version but not the other. Do you get the CPU used in place of the GPU if you just create a new primitive in the middle of an empty scene - you may need to look at the log after rendering to see what was used (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File, there should be a section telling how many samples each device handled).
