I also color. I find it very relaxing for my brain.

It is super relaxing! I've attached a picture that I colored. Ignore the Harry Potter wand on top of it! I am a tremendous geek! Lol.

After seeing what people have posted in the gallery this weekend, I should just quit. Wonderful stuff. I should just sit at the kitchen table with my crayons and coloring book.

Yeah, I've felt that more than once.

LOL, the picked last comment reminds me of the same thing when I was a kid. It's not always bad being picked last for a sports team when we were forced to in PE in school. I remember because of my hyperactive ways in the creeks & streets I was very athletic as a child & teenager and quite coordinated too having practiced gymnast moves with my sister and her friends as little girls often do. It didn't matter because as far as they were concerned.  I was still picked last and still got the groans from the team that wound up with me and laughs from the team that didn't get me. laugh

I don't compete with others rendering either (although I admit to trying to get free store vouchers from time to time) but there are a few rendering and lighting styles I see from others I'd like to learn to consistently be able to apply the techniques used but haven't manage to do it consistently. I don't think you'd really call the competing though. It's like ordering a cheese pizza next time you eat instead of a peanut butter sandwich because you like the smell the cheese pizza your friend had better.

I started with 3D because I want to make pictures and I can't draw. I've tried but it always comes out unrecognizable. I've fiddled with pencils, crayons etc but never created anything worth looking at. I found a fascinating thing in a shop once, it was a sort of thick white card and if you scratched it with a sharp point it left a black line. It looked really good but I was probably even worse at drawing on it than on paper.

Maybe I should try those adult colouring books you see in shops, they're supposed to be very relaxing. I did see an adult join the dots book somewhere but I tought that was bit odd.

As far as sport is concerned, I hated school sports. In the winter we had to play football (not the American version). I was in the bottom group, top group was the inter school and inter house players, middle group were people who could play reasonably well and then there was us. And I was one of the last to be picked for a team in that lot. That was unless the pitch was too wet for football, then we did cross country running on a nearby common. I always associate running with lots of slippery wet mud. Eventually the school realised it wasn't worth trying to make people like me play sports and in the 6th form we were allowed to do chess on our games afternoon. I'm not much good at chess, but at least you can do it in a warm and dry room. The only sport I like is tennis. I used to play tennis with my father, and when you mess up you don't have people moaning that you let the team down.

Aw you should not be discourage by others art work, if you work & play with daz long enough you should be able to do all kinds of neat stuff like animation

Here is one I just posted this one last night I hope it will encourage you to keep going :)

Karate Girl in the 5th chamber of the Shaolin

Watch along as Suki the Karate Girl tries to defeat the 3rd master of the 5th chamber in this 3 minute animated short of Kung Fu mastery.. Created with Daz Studio 4.12 pro, rendered in NVIDIA iRAY

    click pic to play

...nicely done.  I wish I had the horsepower to do animation. I would so love to do my namesake's duel with her Sensei which even though she lost, was the "passing test" for her at the dojo, and is very central to her story.

It leads to the scene attached below.

KK: " I see that I have so much more to learn."

Master Kobyashi:  "And that is why you truly win and the others don't."

BTW where did you find a Naginata?

I would like to see that scene animated too bet it be great.

Thanks for watching my anime :)

...I love your work.  Wonderful visual storytelling.

Yeah that long ponytail would be a total pain though.  I now have OOT's Rochelle Ponytail which has a lot more bones and morphs to it (it even has upside down morphs).  That hair though is a killer to render even in a still frame image let alone multiple "cels" required for animating.  I feel I would need Pixar's custom system which they used for Merida's hair in Brave just for the movements.

...yeah I wasn't into most "standard" American team sports except Baseball.  In grade school I was "drafted" into playing basketball in because I was one of the tallest kids in the school. Unfortunately (fortunately for me) I lacked the coordination needed to run and dribble as well as make a layup, and after a few games that came to a "merciful" end.  Also picked up and enjoyed tennis as well and played that (along with Baseball) in my high school & early college years.  When I was growing up, footy (the "football" all other nations play) wasn't very popular here.  Most of my teen years and early 20s was I was pretty thin (actually a bit underweight) and lithe but with a good arm spread which worked well in baseball and tennis.

In our style of football, I would have been pulverised.

I used OOT Linda Ponytail Hair for this animations I added a dForce Modifier Weight Node to just the pony of the hair in this film to make it more dynamic. i was pretty happy with the results  of course it was the only item deforce in her wardrobe so it was not much to render out in animations . I've been having pretty good luck making conforming hair deforce. maybe you could give it a try

A fantastic writer named Daniel Pinkwater wrote a picture-book for children entitled 'Bear's Picture'.   A bear paints a picture that is full of splotches of color but does not seem to represent anything.  A pair of 'fine proper gentlemen' look at his work and ask what it is.  The bear says that it is a honey tree, a cold stream in a forest, and other nice things.  The two fine proper gentlemen protest that it doesn't look like any of those things.   "'It doesn't have to,' said the bear, 'it is _my_ picture.'"  The two gentlemen go away saying that bears are not the sort of fellows to paint picture.  The last page shows Bear looking at his finished work and says, 'But the bear looked at his picture and was happy.'

    Your art is YOUR art.

I love this. :) I used to actively encourage my daughter to use non-traditional colors for things.

"What color should I make the tree, papi?"
    "Purple!"
    *giggling* "What? Trees aren't purple!"
    "Maybe yours is?"
    "But why?"
"Because it's fun!  Besides it's your picture; so it can be whatever you want it to be."

I can relate to what you are saying.

There are such outstanding Images in the Galleries that one can feel a bit deflated.

The best thing you can do is, carry on to carry on with what you love doing.

Nothing comes from nothing and practice is what makes you great.

A lot of the Images, the top Images are also post worked in a 2D Image Editing program such as PS.

Do not feel bad, take those Images as an inspiration. :)

^^This.  A lot of images are post-worked in variety of art programs.  All of my images are enhanced in either Photoshop, Topaz Studio, or Clip Paint Studio.  There are free programs out there like GIMP and MetiBang.

I'm not really quitting. But I feel like the kid who gets picked last when choosing teams.

I used to feel the same way. Sometimes I spend hours creating something in Daz and I only get one or two thumbs up in the gallery. I used to feel bad, like no one cared, but I learned to not give up and keep trying. It just keep pushing me to try again and challenge myself to do it better. So it's not about the thumbs up, or being in the top gallery slider (which I hope to be there one day), it's about doing it because you enjoy doing it and wanting to try out new things and learn along the way. When you least expect it, an opportunity will come at work or somewhere else where you will need to use some Daz skills and by then you will already be ready and confident to acomplish the task. So don't give up! And thanks to James47. He is a pro at what he does, yet he is always has something positive and encouranging to say about my art and the arts of others.

I constantly feel like this when posting things in the gallery and contests, until I realized that most of the images are not only using DAZ3D as the render engine. I've gotten just a few thumbs up on a couple of my best images (I'm no prodigy, and of course I'm always learning). I also realized that not a lot of people browse the gallery. After posting one image on here vs. a FB page, I got more likes on the FB page. So I would just keep going at it, and learning it. I enjoy creating the scenes, and the different charaters/outfits. I strive to use only DAZ3D + the occational Photoshop as my only render sources to keep things original, and straight. You're not alone

Nope, just get workin'. You don't gotta be perfect, you just got to keep doing. An AWFUL lot of suck comes before greatness. :)

The sheer tonnage of things for which this advice applies would stun a team of oxen in its tracks.

  • I think this help us stay humbled. To not take things for granted and appreciate it more, especially since we enjoy doing it.

But one day when you do get a break and things change to your favor, keep staying humble, remember why you did it in the first place and encourage others as well.

  • 3dOutlaw3dOutlaw Posts: 2,481

Don't quit, but a break is sometimes a good thing!  (prevents burnout)  I often switch to a good show, some 2d, a video game, working out, going for walks, etc...for a while, and that gives me new inspiration, and then I return with some new ideas.

  • I would recommend going and taking classes on art and photography at the local community college! If this is too expensive go to public library and check out books on composition, lighting, perspective, color, and photoshop techniques. Finished art always looks better after doing alot of art techniques to it. Daz studio is not a push button to make art tool, it is just a starting place. Oh, and last but not least >>> approach art the way a kid does just have fun!!! Good luck

This decision to quit DAZ Studio sounds more like a case of burnout on the OP's part.  I've been there myself, and I had vowed to quit on many occasions.  And today, I am still into DAZ Studio to this day.

If anything is going to end with DAZ Studio, it will be my purchasing of items from the DAZ Shop and Renderosity, as I am running out of ideas.  I have only one priority item in my wishlist right now, and two on Renderosity.  They will be purchased as early as October.  There are other low-priority items on my wishlist too, but there is no real urgency to buy them soon.  But regardless of what happens, my love for DAZ Studio will always have a place in my heart.

nothing like truth in advertising  laugh how about back in the old timey west .. the snake oil salesmen . selling Toms old fashion bitters. a cure for everything that ails you & seeming most of the medicine back then had mercury in it,  it mostly like made your illnesses worst.

My husband always says "  if they say on Internet it must be true. because they couldn't not say it if it was not true. yes he was being sarcastic.

Yeah, I remember those ads.  I even followed up on it and sent away for the book, but I was too young at the time to carry on with it.  But when I got to be about 15 I started seriously lifting.  On and off for 35 years, I carried on.  Great time in my life, even lived on the beach in Florida.  But never did kick sand in a wimp's face though.  I even had female admirers squeezing my biceps and traps.cool  Too bad for them that I was batting for the other team.wink

    The X-ray glasses didn't work ??? surprise

When I was a kid I bought American comics when I could find them and I had a bit of pocket money left. I enjoyed the stories, and there were those amazing adverts. I was amazed at the sort of things American's could buy. There were the X-ray specs, the Sea Monkeys that looked like little people with crowns and tridents, devices that could throw your voice etc, etc. But I couldn't buy any of these in the UK, and my pocket money probably wouldn't have been enough anyway.

    Another childhood illusion shattered.
