Roman Gladiator “Stable”

Hi Folks!

Not sure if this is the right place for this—apologies if it isn’t!

I’ve been poking around for some Roman based assets, and I’ve found a few things that might work, but I wanted to put it to you all before making the plunge and purchasing.

I’m looking for a ludus a la Spartacus (https://spartacus.fandom.com/wiki/Ludus), but I haven’t quite found what I’m looking for. I know there is a colloseum, and with some imagination the sumo stable could work. But I’m really looking for something with a more Roman villa feel. The Roman Patio exists (https://www.daz3d.com/roman-patio), but i’d like something with transitional space and Iray if possible (I sound picky I know).

Any leads would be appreciated!

There's a definite upstairs/downstairs split to the House of Batiatus. Do you really need a "transition" between the two? Just a staircase is all you need, really.

For the ludus, you just kind of need a courtyard with dirt, and maybe a balcony. Kitbashing some DM sets, maybe? Replacing the ground/floor with any Dirt surface (even a flat plane with a Dirt shader) should be sufficient.
DM have at least one Roman set at Rendo.

Interior scenes for the gladiators? Any of the medieval castle interiors. It's a lot of rock work instead of concrete, but it just needs to look rough hewn, I think.

For the party scene above the ludus, something like the Ancient Temple Courtyard (hey... another courtyard!)... https://www.daz3d.com/ancient-temple-courtyard

Hylas beat me to it, but he missed maybe the most important part: https://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/modular-madness---stable-builder---100-free/78946

RDNA used to have a Roman villa (in several parts) in their DeepFreeze collection. It was very old, so the textures would have been pretty low-res.  No idea whether it made the migration. Quite a lot of the really old stuff didn't.

  • Wow! Thank you all!

@TheBlurstofTimes (love the name) you’re totally right about the upstairs downstairs feel. And having them be two separate assets actually accentuates that a lot. Long balcony courtyards are perfect.

@Hylas, Gordig and J0del—thank you for the links, especially free things (can’t say no to that). That really gives a great vibe. And I’ll definitely check out RDNA.

Only one I have with Villa in the name was Villa Paola by Dexsoft-Games. It is strictly poser with .xml and .tga files, but it looks like a house in the countryside. Not sure when I was working there that I downloaded anything from the deep freeze.

There is a nice small arena by Rick Bridenbaker at sharecg, called 'Academy in the Round'. With some texture changings it's perfect for a Gladiator school arena: https://www.sharecg.com/v/75498/ (I hope it's ok to post the link here). Very interesting for all Ludus fans: The archaeological site of Carnuntum in Austria, close to Vienna. They are rebuilding parts of the Roman city of Carnuntum, with arenas, at least one big ludus, villae etc. Absolutely fascinating. You can watch good ludus scenes in Carnuntum's official video:

I've been collecting a lot of Roman stuff lately for a project and there's a tremendous amount hidden in Rendo's catalog.  I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/rtr-ludus/78959/ , which works pretty well in Iray with a little tweaking.   There are also some artists at Renderotica, Davo and Freeone, who have some products in the right vein once you look past all the sex and blood.

Roman Atrium is an absolute wonder...I love this set. I filled the pool with iray water and it looks so absolutely stunning!

The one critism I have for the set, in the couple of times or so that I have used it, is that some of the textures are quite low res, and so it is a problem if you render a close up of one part of the product, rather than a shot of the whole scene. I know some people prefer sets with textures that render out of the box without exceeding the VRAM of their hardware, but personally I prefer high res textures that I can optimise should my PC find them too taxing.

I can absolutely recommend Carnuntum. They have reconstructed a Roman bath there that's actually working, with heating and water and everything. Unfortunately visitors are not allowed to get into the pools. But it really gives you a feeling for the atmosphere. And for reconstruction they used tools and materials from the Roman era, no modern technology. The place is really special :)

This was one of the TransPond sets. And yeah, for Poser. But everything was, back then. They looked rather good in the promos for their age, but the creation date was 2003, so it would probably need completely new textures, or shaders, and it's anyone's guess what it would do in Iray. Like I say, there were a number of pieces to it. An Artium, Courtyard, Garden, and Bathhouse. Plus a Furniture pack. That DeepFreeze collection was rather a treasure trove for props and sets.
