Vendors: please include versions in your thumbnails

[Vendors: please include versions in your thumbnails] Case in point: Lyoness's "Daphni" has both G3F and G8F characters, but in Smart Content, the only difference between them is the name is "LY Daphni" for G3F, and "LY Daphni HD" for G8F; the thumbnail images are identical, and neither identifies which generation the character is.

This isn't meant to single out this product - it just happens to be the latest such product I have purchased that doesn't distinguish its format, whether it's figures that could be multiple generations, or materials that are duplicated in 3Delight and IRay, and there is no indication from the thumbnails, and often not even the caption, to tell the difference. If there's enough room in the thumbnail to write out your vendor name and the character name, there's enough room to include an icon, at least, showing which format the product is intended for or based upon.

This should always be part of the QA checklist, as well.

Since you did single me out on this one, I will explain why I don't have any abreviations on the thumbnails.

Years ago when I did duplicate sets for V4 and G2F, I tried to put the abbreviations on the icons.  QA had me remove them.  I am not allowed to use any abbreviations.  Genesis must always be spelled completely out.  So, I've not tried to tag them since.

HOWEVER, I completely understand the confusion and had recently come to the conclusion that I need to try again.  Heretofore, I was planning on putting a 3 or an 8 on the thumbnails to assist in identifying them.

Basically, I have heard your complaint and had brain stormed out a way around the "no abbreviation" rule.  I hope this will help you out in the future.  I just wish I had figured that little one out sooner!

@Lyoness, I think that rule may have changed, cause I've seen some character models which has G3 / G8 in their thumbnails, I own some that has that. And if you still are being told not to, perhaps adding them to the name? In the case of Daphni above, perhaps using LY Daphni G3F / LY Daphni G8F or something like that?

nope. no abbreviations.  I must always spell genesis completely out. This is a branding issue and will not change.
I see items from the other store with the abbreviation on them.
I think a 3 and an 8 will be good enough for the future. No problem using the numbers.

That's really odd, cause I have this character and a couple of others who has g3f and g8f in their thumbnails, which are bought here in at Daz. I personally find that real helpful, but just using a 3 or 8 in the thumbnail or name would also be helpful :) Many thanks for working out a work around *hugs*

The scripts for the various RSSY converters all have abbreviations on the icons. Like G3>>>>>>G8 on its icon. I'm pretty sure I've seen others do it, too.

I would expect that Daz would have to make an exception for products that cater to multiple generations, otherwise it is straight up idiocy to expect the name Genesis to be spelled out every single time on 90 pixel icon.

    Branding. Sigh.

Also, be thankful Phil Collins hasn't come after you, Daz!

As someone that ends up right clicking and browse to folder a lot to figure out what gen something might be from, I definitely concur that more people should include a note in the thumbnail.

As for the aforementioned 'no abbreviation' rule, that's just silly.  People abbreviate stuff all the time, heck the US Military lives and dies by abbreviations.  As for Daz Studio, we ALL know what G3F means.  The only one that might be a bit weird is Genesis 1, since it's just referred to as Genesis.

I could see M7 being an issue, as this could be Monique or Michael or Mika, but G2F, G2M, G3F, G3M, G8F and G8M, well those should always be reserved for the Genesis generations.  In any case, clothing usually does OK when transferring to various figures from the same generation, so even if an outfit is intended for Victoria 7, listing it as G3F/Genesis 3 Female is still helpful

This becomes particularly important when autofitting clothes from other generations.  Again, if there was a Genesis, G2, G3, or G8 note, then this will speed up autofitting as we won't have to 'browse to folder location' to figure out which gen the clothes are from, unless it's listed in the item name of course.

I can see Pre-Genesis being an issue, as I'm not sure how much abberviation overlap there is, but since Autofit concentrates mainly on only a few figures, mainly Michael, Victoria, maybe Aiko, and a couple of others, I'd say that if there's a common autofit feature, the abbreviation should be OK.

My thoughts on the subject anyways!  The goal here should be to speed up our workflow, not make it more difficult than it needs to be.

That's something that Smart Content should superimpose of the icons when it looks at the model's metadata before displaying the icon. I know some things like materials it doesn't really matter but for many things it does.

Smart Content needs to go further in categorizing standards.

You folks in QA need to reconsider.

Until daz implements something like that in smart content, ManFriday's Turbo Content does draw compatibility information like "3F" or "8F" over all figure icons, and for clothing and hair too.

  • If you select a file then the Info tab in the bottom section of the pane will give the full file path - you may need to expand the bottom section using the button in the lower bar.

Posters, please put all the salient infromation in the body of the post - don't split it across subject line and post. But do put the basic description in the subject line too, that is still desirable.

mebbe pick a consistant color background for the generation.  like 8 is always purple

i always replace the 90pixel thumb with the larger tip thumb.

no reason there has to be a 90 px version

You can just hover with your cursor over any icon and the file location will appear.

I do that but it's not a guarantee you'll see what you're hoping to see.
