Saving Studio 4.10

    What do I need to save in order to reinstall it on my new computer?  Which directories need to be saved?  I know about my content directories.  Does DIM save the installer and where? Found the installer in the DIM Download folder.  Is that all I need?

      Unrelated, but still amusing, in DIM studio i shown as 4.11 as installed.  I never installed it and my install IS 4.10, verified in 'help/about' in Studio.

    If you are indeed running 4.10, and have not downloaded 4.11 yet, you will see files for the 4.11 version in the Updates section of the Ready to Download tab. Those are the files for which you need to save the previous version (DAZ Studio, and any Plugins that are associated with that specific version of Studio, like Decimator, or Dynamic Clothing Control, if you have any). Copy those out of the downlaod folder to a safe place otherwise downloading the 4.11 files will overwrite them and you can't get them back.

         I think it would be easier to copy the whole folder.  There are over 17000 files in there!  I did find the 4.10 program though.  There were several other parts to it.  I found IM00013176-02_DAZStudio410Win64bit, -42, -43, -45.  The only reason I found that is I knew it would be a large file.  You don't know the IM00****** numbers fo those others do you?  The only others in the ready to Download tab are Dynamic clothing control, measure metrics and, possibly dForce starter essentials.

    Do you mean to restore the programs, the entire library, product downloads, database, etc?

        When I finish building my new computer, I'll need to move my install of 4.10 to it.  I'd prefer to keep using 4.10 for now, and I heard you can't re-download it from DAZ.  I'll also be changing my operating system to Windows 10 from 7.  If I copy my Studio directory and Content directories to the new machine, what else do I have to transfer?  Where is CMS stored?  What about plugins?  That kind of thing.  I thought it would be neater to install Studio fresh and copy my content over seperately.  If I can't find the installer, that won't work.

    This is an edited excerpt of a conversation I had with DAZ helpdesk when asking exactly this question:

    • DAZ: You can create a new folder in /Applications/Daz 3D named something like Daz Studio 4.10 (old) and transfer everything from the DazStudio4 folder here. When you install the new build, it shouldn't erase the older version.
       

    • Me: Thank you for the answer. Does this mean the update to 4.11. won't make any changes to the "My DAZ 3D Library" folder?

    • DAZ: Yes, that is correct.

       

    Mind, I haven't actually done the update yet so I can't personally confirm it works like this. But I assume they know what they're talking about.

    to be on the safe side, save a copy of each zip/installer to a different drive or thumbdrive ( ie DS4.10 installer, plus a copy of each 4.10 version of any plugins that you use ie: GoZ for DS4.10, the Photoshop Bridge,the older Optitex Dynamic Cloth plug-in, etc)

    To start fresh, you would be best to install 4.10 on the new machine from scratch. using your existing downloads. If your downloads (Package Archives) are on an external drive, all you need to do is connect it to the new computer, ensuring it has the same drive letter (it could be different, but that would make life a little more difficult). If everything is on an internal drive that cannot be moved, you will have to copy all of the downloads to the new computer.

    To retain the installation status of your products, you must copy the entire Library, Thumbnail Archive and Manifest Archive to the same location on the new computer (unlless they are also on the external drive also). If you want to re-install all content, this part isn't necessary. Some people say to copy the CMS Database, too, or you can rebuild it by re-importing Metadata from the Content DB Maintenance panel after everything is in place.

    Install DIM on the new computer, and make sure it is set up with the correct folder paths for downloads and installation. If done properly, all your products will show in DIM as installed, even programs, which isn't really true at this point. To force the status back to Ready to Install, uninstall DAZ Studio (on the new machine), which should clear it. Install DAZ Studio and any related program files (i.e., PostgreSQL) and all plugins from your current Package archive. (Alternatively, you can Re-Install, which should accomplish the same thing.)

    I use DIM to downgrade and upgrade as it installs things the right way.  DIM will insist on installing the latest version and only that, but you can cheat it to install an earlier version this way:

    UPDATED AND SIMPLIFIED:

    1. Remove the install files for the installed version from the Downloads folder and replace them with the files for the version you want to install instead.  
    2. Start DIM in Offline mode, it will then pick up the version in the Downloads folder and show it as an update on the Ready to Install tab.  Then just install it - it will automatically remove the existing version even if it's newer.

    That's it.

    Well I think I've found out what the problem is - I didn't remove the 4.11 entry under Ready to Download after uninstalling 4.11, and then used that entry to install 4.10, which doesn't work unless you rename the 4.10 files to 4.11.

    There seem to be several ways to do it actually, the simplest seem to be to just remove the install files for the installed version from the Downloads folder and replace them with the files for the version you want to install.  Then start DIM in offline mode, it will then pick up the version in the Downloads folder and show it as an update on the Ready to Install tab.  Then just install it - it will automatically remove the existing version even if it's newer.

    i had asked similar qwuestion awhile back. I'm going to reinstall everything from scratch. The old 4.10 probably manually, and whatever plugins, then DIM ... and then let DIM find everything in my purchases and go have lunch for a few hours and let it churn and burn. just need to be sure not to install 4.11 ... no checkmark on that product or any updates needed for 4.11. 

    Then it should be all clean and neat, unlike the super mess I know have.

    DIM just goes by the checksums (in the manifest files, I think), it doesn't care which version is newer.
